Royal Challengers Bangalore vs Chennai Super Kings (Match 24) – Highlights
The target was 227 runs in 20 overs, almost impossible. But Glenn Maxwell and Faf du Plessis have shown that it is quite possible in a few overs of devastating batting. However, these two batters could not maintain their concentration for long. After their departure, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) lost the sure-winning match.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) defeated Royal Challengers by 8 runs in a high-scoring match of 444 runs in two innings at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. After losing the toss and batting first, Super Kings collected a big score of 226 runs. RCB’s innings stopped at 218 runs when they came down to reply.
Batting first, Super Kings did not start well in the opponent’s home. They lost the wicket of Ruturaj Gaikwad for the team’s 16 runs. CSK could score only 25 runs after losing 1 wicket in 4 overs.
But the beginning of turning around is from there. Ajinkya Rahane was accompanied by the in-form Devon Conway at the start. Conway made a partnership of 74 runs with him. MS Dhoni’s team got the basis for big runs from that. Rahane returned with 37 runs off 20 balls after being bowled by Wanindu Hasaranga.
After Rahane’s departure, Kiwi opener Conway made a stormy partnership with Shivam Dube. Where Shivam played an inning of 52 runs off 27 balls with 2 fours and 5 sixes. Ambati Rayudu could not bat long but did not waste balls as well. He scored 14 runs in 6 balls.
Conway could not make use of the opportunity to score a century. Harshal Patel got him out for 83 runs. His innings of 45 balls had an equal number of 6 fours and sixes. In the end, Moeen Ali’s cameo innings took CSK to 226 runs.
All the bowlers got wickets for RCB. But except Mohammed Siraj (30 runs in 4 overs), all the bowlers gave more than 10 runs per over. Pacer Vijaykumar Vyshak gave away the highest 62 runs in 4 overs.
Batting for a big target, RCB lost the first two wickets for 15 runs. Then the magic of du Plessis and Maxwell began. The two played only 61 balls to form a partnership of 126 runs. Maxwell, who came down to bat at number five brought the team back into the match with a tornado innings of 76 off 36 balls. Maxwell finished the innings with 8 sixes and 3 fours.
Smashing 4 sixes and 5 fours, du Plessis scored 62 runs off 33 balls. RCB needed 68 runs from 36 balls after du Plessis was dismissed in the 14th over. The batting side had 6 wickets in hand then. It was not that difficult to win the match from there. Things got tougher for CSK after Ruturaj Gaikwad missed a catch of Dinesh Karthik in the 17th over.
But in that over, CSK’s bowler Tushar Deshpande picked up the wicket of Karthik (28 from 14 balls) and made RCB’s winning equation 35 runs from 18 balls. It was not difficult for RCB to win the match even from there.
But in the next over, the Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana took 1 wicket conceding just 4 runs. In the 19th over, Deshpande took 1 wicket for 12 runs. In fact, in these two overs, RCB came very close to being knocked out of the match.
RCB’s lower order could not meet up the equation of 19 runs to win in the last over. They managed to score 10 runs in the last over. RCB’s innings stopped at 218 runs after losing 8 wickets. Tushar Deshpande took the highest number of 3 wickets for CSK. Besides, Matheesha Pathirana took 2 wickets and Maheesh Theekshana, Akash Singh, and Moeen Ali took 1 wicket each.
After winning this match, Chennai Super Kings climbed to 3rd place in the points table. On the other hand, Royal Challengers Bangalore is in 7th place in the standings after being defeated.
