Mumbai Indians vs Rajasthan Royals (Match 42) – Highlights
Mumbai Indians (MI) made the 1000th match of the IPL memorable. Batting first at the Wankhede Stadium, Rajasthan Royals (RR) got a huge capital of 212 runs, relying on the innings of 124 runs by Yashasvi Jaiswal. In chasing, Rohit Sharma’s team crossed the big target of RR with 3 balls remaining in the game and 6 wickets in hand.
Tim David’s three consecutive sixes in the last over ensured the victory for MI. He scored 45 runs off 14 balls. He smashed 2 fours and 5 sixes. Besides, Cameron Green scored 44 runs off 26 balls and Suryakumar Yadav made 55 runs off 29 balls.
RR captain Sanju Samson won the toss and decided to bat first. The opening pair of Jaiswal and Jos Buttler gave the team a great start coming down to bat. They scored 65 runs in 6 overs of Powerplay. Jaiswal batted aggressively at one end, but Buttler batted quite slowly at the other end.
The team’s two top batsmen Buttler and Samson’s bat did not light up in this match. Buttler returned to the dressing room after scoring 18 runs off 19 balls. Samson could not go far even after opening the account by hitting a 6 in the first ball. He scored 14 runs off 10 balls before being dismissed by Arshad Khan with a catch off Tilak Varma.
Devdutt Padikkal was bowled getting 2 runs. Jason Holder, Shimron Hetmyer, and Dhruv Jurel also did not score well. No other batsman had a good collection in RR’s innings. Jaiswal fought alone when the procession of batters coming and going off at one end continued. He scored his first century in IPL career off 53 balls.
It was the third century of this year’s IPL. Harry Brook and Venkatesh Iyer made the first two centuries of IPL 2023. Even after the century, Jaiswal batted devastatingly. With 16 fours and 8 sixes, he played impeccable 62-ball innings when he got out with just 2 balls left in the innings. In the end, the innings of Royals stopped at 212 after losing 7 wickets.
Arshad Khan took the utmost number of 3 wickets for MI. Besides, Piyush Chawla took 2 wickets and Jofra Archer and Riley Meredith took 1 wicket each.
Chasing a huge target of 213 runs, MI did not get off to a good start at all. Skipper Rohit Sharma was dismissed for 3 runs. However, Ishan Kishan partnered with Cameron Green and scored quick runs in the power play. They scored 58 runs after 6 overs.
However, these two batters returned to the pavilion because of Ravichandran Ashwin. Ishan returned with 28 runs off 23 balls (4 fours) and Green returned with 44 runs off 26 balls (4 fours and 2 sixes). RR signaled a return to the match by dismissing the two set batsmen quickly. But that’s when Suryakumar Yadav shined.
With 8 boundaries and 2 sixes, the 360-degree batsman made the Wankhede stadium crazy. He played some of his trademark shots. He scored fifty off only 24 balls. Then Suryakumar returned to the dressing room after scoring 55 runs off 29 balls with a catch off Sandeep Sharma in the delivery of Trent Boult.
Mumbai needed 72 runs to win in the last 6 overs. But after the return of Suryakumar, MI’s lamp of hope almost went out. However, Tim David and Tilak Varma did not let the wheel of runs getting slow down. Australian cricketer Tim David was playing shots from the beginning of the innings. He scored 45 runs off just 14 balls.
Mumbai was required of 17 runs to win in the last over. David ended the game by hitting three sixes off Holder’s first three balls, where his strike rate was 321.42. With this win, MI has moved up to 7th place in the points table. On the other hand, RR is in 3rd place in the standings after getting defeated in this match.
