2023 Cricket World Cup Format Breakdown

2023 Cricket World Cup Format Breakdown

The anticipation is building as cricket enthusiasts around the world gear up for the 13th edition of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in 2023. Hosted by cricket-crazy India for the fourth time in its history, this quadrennial event promises to deliver riveting matches, unforgettable moments, and nail-biting encounters. In this blog post, we will dissect the tournament’s format, qualification process, and its intriguing history.

The 2023 Cricket World Cup format closely mirrors that of the 2019 edition held in England and Wales. Ten teams will vie for the coveted trophy, following a two-stage structure comprising a round-robin stage and knockout rounds.

During the round-robin stage, each of the ten teams will compete against every other team once. A win will grant the victorious side two points, while a no-result match will result in both teams sharing a point. This stage serves as the battleground where teams must prove their mettle to advance further.

The top four teams emerging victorious from the round-robin stage will secure their spots in the semi-finals, setting the stage for intense clashes to determine the finalists. The two semi-final winners will lock horns in the grand finale, where the ultimate champion will be crowned, etching their name in cricketing history.

The path to the 2023 Cricket World Cup is paved through the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League 2020-23 (CWCSL), which acts as the primary qualification mechanism. India, as the host nation, automatically secures a berth in the tournament.

The CWCSL standings are pivotal in determining the seven additional direct entries into the World Cup. The top seven teams on the CWCSL table, alongside India, will clinch their spots in the prestigious event. However, the journey doesn’t end there.

The remaining five teams from the CWCSL table, along with the top three teams from the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 and the top two teams from the 2023 World Cup Qualifier Play-off, will engage in the 2023 Cricket World Cup Qualifier. This intense competition will ultimately decide the final two teams that will complete the World Cup lineup.

The history of the Cricket World Cup is rich with memorable moments and iconic performances. First held in 1975 in England, this prestigious tournament has been a defining stage for cricket’s most exceptional talents.

In 2023, India will be hosting the World Cup for the fourth time, marking the first occasion when they serve as the sole host. In the past, India co-hosted the event in 1987, 1996, and 2011, each time contributing to the tournament’s aura with their passionate fans and cricketing prowess.

The defending champions heading into the 2023 World Cup are England, who clinched the trophy on their home turf in 2019. Their thrilling victory over New Zealand in the final at Lord’s left an indelible mark on cricket history.

Australia stands tall as the most successful team in Cricket World Cup history, having clinched the title a remarkable five times. West Indies and India are close behind with two championships each, while England, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka have each lifted the prestigious trophy once.

AFG vs SL Match Analysis

Afghanistan was defeated by Bangladesh by 89 runs in their opening match of the season on Sunday. Sri Lanka defeated Bangladesh by 5 wickets in their first game. Afghanistan and Sri Lanka meet in the sixth match of the Asia Cup 2023 on Tuesday afternoon at the Gaddafi Stadium.

Afghanistan is in terrible form in this format and struggled for much of their defeat to Bangladesh on Sunday. To compete with Sri Lanka in this match, they will need to improve their bat and ball performance. With only Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Gulbadin Naib taking wickets for Afghanistan on Sunday, the team management will be hoping for its more experienced bigger names, like Mohammad Nabi, Fazalhaq Farooqi, and Rashid Khan, to be more threatening in this encounter.

Sri Lanka won with 66 balls remaining on Thursday, thanks to a great bowling performance and a solid batting performance. In this encounter, they will be quite optimistic about winning another ODI. Despite winning with plenty of time remaining in Match 2 of the competition, Sri Lanka has plenty of space for growth after losing 5 wickets with the bat. All of the players played through the clash against Bangladesh without injury, and we expect the same starting lineup in this match.

AFG vs SL Team Preview & Squads

Afghanistan

With the bat, we pick Ibrahim Zadran, Hashmatullah Shahidi, and Rahmat Shah for Afghanistan. Opener Ibrahim Zadran has an outstanding ODI record, with an average of 56.50 in this format. He’ll be excited to bat again at this location after hitting 10 fours and one six on this pitch on Sunday.

Rahmat Shah has a best ODI score of 114. The skipper, Hashmatullah Shahidi, scored his 15th ODI half-century against Bangladesh. Many analysts saw his departure as an indication that Afghanistan would lose their first match.

Our bowling selections for Afghanistan include Fazalhaq Farooqi, Rashid Khan, and Mujeeb Ur Rahman. On Sunday Mujeeb dismissed Bangladesh opener Mohammad Naim. Rashid had 0-66 but has 170 ODI wickets at a strike rate of 27.7. Fazalhaq Farooqi also went wicketless and gave runs at an 8.83 per over rate. This pitch, on the other hand, will provide him with plenty of pace in this match.

Sri Lanka

Our batting choices for Sri Lanka are Dimuth Karunaratne, Pathum Nissanka, and Charith Asalanka. Nissanka has four international centuries, three of which have come in this format. Dimuth was knocked out early in the first game but has a good all-format record at international level.

Charith Asalanka, a 26-year-old batting all-rounder, scored an unbeaten 62 against Bangladesh in the Asia Cup 2023, leading the team from 43-3 to victory. Asalanka has batted in 31 One-Day Internationals and has ten 50-plus scores.

With the ball, we pick Maheesh Theekshana, Matheesha Pathirana, and Kasun Rajitha for Sri Lanka. Matheesha Pathirana, a youthful fast bowler, shined in the IPL 2023, dismissing Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, Taskin Ahmed, and Mustfizur Rahman on Thursday. Rajitha will benefit from the extra pace on this track, and her best performances with this format are 3-31. Against Bangladesh, Theekshana finished with 2-19 from 8 overs.

The captains have opted to bat first after winning the toss in the first four matches of the 2023 Asia Cup. We anticipate that both captains in this match would like to bat first.

On Tuesday, the weather is expected to be bright and extremely hot throughout the match. Throughout the game, the temperature won’t drop below 30 degrees.

In Lahore, there is a decent batting wicket with a fast surface. If fast bowlers maintain consistency in their line and length, they will benefit.

CPL 2023: A Closer Look at International Players' Impact in St Lucia Kings vs. Barbados Royals -16th Match

The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2023 has been nothing short of exhilarating, with each match offering a rollercoaster of emotions for cricket fans worldwide. In the 16th match between St Lucia Kings and Barbados Royals, we witnessed some outstanding performances from international players. Let’s take a closer look at how they left their mark on the game.

St Lucia Kings’ International Stars

Colin Munro

Colin Munro displayed his prowess as a left-handed batsman, scoring 33 runs in 27 balls, including five exquisite boundaries. His contribution added crucial runs to the St Lucia Kings‘ total, setting the stage for a competitive game. His elegant left-handed batting style was on full display as he gracefully maneuvered the ball around the field, finding the gaps with precision. Those five exquisite boundaries he struck were a testament to his skill and timing, showcasing his ability to take on the opposition’s bowlers with confidence.

Peter Hatzoglou

CPL 2023: International Players' Impact in St Lucia Kings vs. Barbados Royals - 16th Match Peter Hatzoglou

Peter Hatzoglou was the star with the ball for the Kings, taking two wickets in his three-over spell while conceding just four runs. His impressive economy rate of 1.33 made it challenging for the Barbados Royals to build a substantial partnership.

Sean Williams

CPL 2023: International Players' Impact in St Lucia Kings vs. Barbados Royals - 16th Match Sean Williams

Sean Williams may have scored only 5 runs in 4 balls, but his ability to find the boundary with a single four showcased his potential to accelerate the scoring when needed. His brief stay at the crease could be pivotal in T20 cricket.

Sikandar Raza

Sikandar Raza made a significant impact both with the bat and ball. He contributed 18 runs in just 8 balls, including two towering sixes. In addition, he picked up a crucial wicket, conceding 21 runs in his three-over spell at an economy rate of 7.00.

Barbados Royals’ International Contenders

Laurie Evans

Laurie Evans had a brief and unfortunate stint at the crease, scoring zero runs in just one ball. Cricket can be unpredictable, and sometimes even the most skilled players face early dismissals.

Roelof van der Merwe

Roelof van der Merwe played a crucial role with both bat and ball. Although he scored 11 runs in 11 balls with a boundary, it was his three wickets in four overs that grabbed the spotlight. However, his economy rate of 10.00 indicated that he was expensive with the ball.

Qais Ahmad

Qais Ahmad contributed nine runs in just four balls, featuring a stunning six. Unfortunately, he couldn’t replicate his success with the ball in this match, going wicketless and conceding 15 runs in his two-over spell at an economy rate of 7.50.

International players are the lifeblood of T20 leagues like the CPL. In the 16th match between St Lucia Kings and Barbados Royals, we witnessed some extraordinary performances that added flavor and excitement to the game. While Colin Munro and Peter Hatzoglou shone for the St Lucia Kings, Roelof van der Merwe’s all-round effort and Qais Ahmad’s explosive batting stood out for the Barbados Royals. Rohit Sharma’s Dominance Over Pakistan in Asia Cup History

Rohit Sharma’s Dominance Over Pakistan in Asia Cup History

Rohit Sharma's Dominance Over Pakistan in Asia Cup History

Cricket fans around the world have witnessed countless memorable encounters between India and Pakistan, each match filled with tension, excitement, and a fierce rivalry that transcends boundaries. In the history of the Asia Cup, one name consistently stands out as a dominant force against Pakistan – Rohit Sharma. Let’s delve into Rohit’s remarkable performances against Pakistan in the Asia Cup, both in ODIs and T20Is.

In the 2020 Asia Cup encounter in Melbourne, Rohit Sharma found himself dismissed early for just 4 runs, courtesy of Pakistan pacer Haris Rauf. Team India was off to a shaky start in a chase of 160, with four wickets down for just 31 runs at the start of the seventh over. However, Rohit’s dismissal did not deter the Indian team, as a sensational century partnership between Virat Kohli (82* off 53) and Hardik Pandya (40 off 37) turned the game in India’s favor. Kohli’s blitzkrieg at the end ultimately led India to a memorable victory.

Rohit Sharma’s dominance over Pakistan in the Asia Cup is not limited to one match. He has played a total of seven games against Pakistan in ODIs in the Asia Cup, accumulating 367 runs at an impressive average of 73.40, including one century. His highest score of 111* off 119 balls came during the 2018 Asia Cup edition in Dubai. In that game, Rohit, along with Shikhar Dhawan (114 off 100), stitched together a monumental opening partnership of 210 runs, propelling India to a resounding nine-wicket victory while chasing 238.

Apart from his century, Rohit has registered four half-centuries against Pakistan in the Asia Cup in ODIs, underlining his consistency in crucial encounters. His scores of 58 in Karachi (2008), 68 in Mirpur (2012), 56 in Mirpur (2014), and 52 in Dubai (2018) were instrumental in India’s success against their arch-rivals.

When we broaden the scope to Rohit’s overall record against Pakistan in ODIs, it becomes evident that he has been a thorn in their side, accumulating 720 runs in 16 games at an impressive average of 51.42, including two centuries. His performances against Pakistan have consistently proven his mettle as one of India’s premier openers.

Switching gears to the T20I format of the Asia Cup, Rohit Sharma’s record against Pakistan may not be as stellar as in ODIs. In three T20I games against Pakistan in the Asia Cup, he has managed to score only 40 runs at an average of 13.33. His performances include a duck in Mirpur in 2016 and scores of 12 and 28 in Dubai during the 2022 edition.

Rohit’s struggle against Pakistan in T20Is extends to his overall record as well. In 11 T20I encounters against Pakistan, he has scored a mere 114 runs at an average of 14.25, with a highest score of 30*.

Rohit Sharma’s dominance over Pakistan in the Asia Cup, especially in ODIs, is undeniable. His ability to consistently perform against Pakistan, often in high-pressure situations, showcases his skill and temperament as a top-class batsman. While T20Is may not be his preferred format against Pakistan, his incredible record in ODIs cements his legacy as one of the finest Indian cricketers in the history of the Asia Cup.

Cricket Highlights, 04 Sep: Asia Cup 2023 (Match 04) – Bangladesh vs Afghanistan: Bangladesh confirmed the Super Four by defeating the Afghans.

Bangladesh vs Afghanistan (Match 04) – Highlights

Bangladesh needed to win by at least 55 runs to reach the Super Four. But Bangladesh won by a bigger margin than that. Bangladesh defeated Afghanistan by 89 runs on Sunday (September 3) at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. As a result, whatever the result of the next match between Afghanistan and Sri Lanka, Bangladesh’s Super Four will not be obstructed.

Despite defeating the Afghans by a big margin, Bangladesh did not reach the top of the points table. Sri Lanka’s net run rate is higher than that of the Tigers even if they have won a match. However, it is not possible to get Bangladesh eliminated from its current position. The explanation for that is a bit complicated.

To knock out Bangladesh in Afghanistan’s last match, they need a net run rate of +0.374. Afghanistan’s net run rate is now -1.780. That means their net run rate in the next match should be 1.780 + 0.374 = 2.154. If the Lankans lose by such a big margin, their net run rate will go down to minus +0.951-2.154= -1.203. In that case, Sri Lanka will be excluded.

Bangladesh won the toss and decided to bat first yesterday. The two openers, Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Mohammad Naim dominated the Afghan bowlers from the beginning. They picked up 30 runs in the first three overs. Bangladesh kept the control of the match in their own hands even though the run rate gradually decreased. Bangladesh scored 50 runs in 8 overs. Bangladesh made 50 in the opening pair after seven matches.

In the tenth over, Mujeeb Ur Rahman struck the first blow in the Bangladesh camp. Naim took the path to the dressing room by scoring 28 runs from 32 balls. In the next over, Towhid Hridoy was caught at slip and got out for zero runs. Najmul Hossain Shanto and Miraz led the team firmly after losing two wickets quickly. Batting against one of the best spin attacks in the world, the duo made an impeccable partnership of 196 runs.

In the end, the pair was broken when Miraz left the field with pain in his hand. Miraz retired hurt after scoring 112 runs off 119 balls. He smashed 7 fours and 3 sixes in this amazing innings. After the departure of the partner, Shanto also returned quickly. He was run out after playing a great innings of 104 runs. His strike rate was 99.05 with 9 fours and 2 sixes.

Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan continued to guide the team towards a big score after the departure of Shanto and Miraz. Both played two crucial cameo innings. Mushfiq scored 25 runs off 15 balls before being run out. Captain Shakib left the field with an unbeaten 32 runs off 18 balls.

Shamim Hossain hit a six on the first ball of his ODI career. He was run out with 11 runs off 6 balls. Afif Hossain left the field with an unbeaten 4 runs off 3 balls.

Bangladesh started well while defending 335 runs. Shoriful Islam took the wicket of the fearsome batsman Rahmanullah Gurbaz in the second over. But since then, Rahmat Shah and Ibrahim Zadran have batted responsibly. Ibrahim and Rahmat made a partnership of 78 runs for the second wicket. But whenever the duo was getting formidable, Taskin Ahmed gave the Tigers a breakthrough.

The right-handed pacer bowled Rahmat (33) to send him back to the pavilion. After that, Ibrahim made a partnership of 52 runs with captain Hashmatullah Shahidi. Ibrahim, who scored 75 runs, was slowly becoming a threat to the Bangladeshi bowlers. In the meantime, Hasan Mahmud came to the bowling and got rid of Ibrahim. The right-handed batsman hit 10 fours and one six in the innings of 74 balls.

The Afghans made a big pair in the next wicket as well. Hashmatullah made a partnership of 62 runs with Najibullah Zadran. The Afghans were well in the match till 36 overs. But then the Bangladeshi bowlers began to dominate. Taskin-Shoriful took control of the match by taking 4 wickets of Afghanistan within 25 balls.

Shoriful picked up two of the 4 wickets. He took the wickets of Hashmatullah and Gulbadin Naib. Nabi (3) was returned by Taskin. Miraz scalped the wicket of Najibullah (17).

At the end, Rashid (24) played a cameo innings, but when he was dismissed by Taskin, the Afghans’ innings ended. The right-handed pacer had also sent off Mujeeb to the dressing room. However, Taskin’s involvement was small in that. Mujeeb (4) was hit out by trying to send the ball out of the boundary.

Taskin snapped up the highest number of 4 wickets for Bangladesh. Shoriful got three wickets. Hasan and Miraz picked up one wicket each. Apart from this, Miraz was selected as the player of the match for his excellent performance with the bat and ball.

Virat Kohli’s Astonishing Asia Cup Records Against Pakistan

Virat Kohli’s Astonishing Asia Cup Records Against Pakistan

Virat Kohli's Astonishing Asia Cup Records Against Pakistan

When it comes to cricketing rivalries, few can match the intensity and passion that surrounds an India-Pakistan encounter. And in the context of the Asia Cup, this rivalry reaches its zenith. Over the years, the Asia Cup has witnessed some memorable clashes between these two cricketing giants, and one player who has consistently shone in these high-pressure matches is none other than Virat Kohli.

In the one-day format of the Asia Cup, Virat Kohli has played against Pakistan on three occasions. What’s truly astonishing is his batting prowess in these matches. Kohli has scored a total of 206 runs at an astonishing average of 68.66. These numbers alone speak volumes about his ability to perform when it matters the most.

Among his remarkable innings, one stands out as an epitome of class and composure. In the 2012 edition of the Asia Cup, held in Mirpur, Kohli played a knock for the ages. He scored a magnificent 183 off just 148 balls, guiding the Indian team to a historic victory. Facing a daunting target of 330, Kohli’s innings was nothing short of masterful. He struck 22 fours and a six, displaying impeccable timing and shot selection. With Kohli at the helm, the Men in Blue chased down the target with ease, winning the game by six wickets.

But Kohli’s dominance against Pakistan in the Asia Cup is not limited to the one-day format. In the T20I format, Kohli has also made his presence felt. In three matches against Pakistan in the Asia Cup T20Is, he has amassed 144 runs at an impressive average of 48. These numbers underline his versatility and adaptability across different formats of the game.

In specific matches, his contributions have been instrumental. In Mirpur during the 2016 edition, Kohli scored a crucial 49, playing a vital role in India’s victory. Fast forward to the 2022 edition in Dubai, and he showcased his consistency by scoring 35 and 60 runs in two separate encounters against Pakistan. These innings, while not as monumental as his 183 in 2012, proved his ability to anchor the innings and perform under immense pressure.

What makes Kohli’s Asia Cup record even more astounding is his overall T20I statistics in the tournament. He has played a total of 10 matches, amassing 429 runs at a staggering average of 85.80. This consistency and ability to excel in high-stakes situations underline his greatness as a T20I batsman.

A moment that will forever be etched in the minds of cricket enthusiasts came during the 2022 Asia Cup. Kohli, the former India captain, smashed his maiden T20I century, ending a drought of over 1000 days without an international century. He scored an unbeaten 122 off just 61 balls against Afghanistan in Dubai.

Virat Kohli’s astonishing Asia Cup records against Pakistan are a testament to his cricketing genius. Whether it’s the one-day format or T20Is, Kohli has consistently delivered match-winning performances against arch-rivals Pakistan. His ability to handle pressure, play anchor, and accelerate when needed makes him a standout performer in the Asia Cup history books.
