5 Cricketers Who Made History in ICC World Cups

The ICC Cricket World Cup is the pinnacle of one-day international cricket, where players from around the world come together to showcase their skills and compete for the coveted title. Over the years, there have been standout performances and remarkable contributions that have etched players’ names in the annals of cricketing history. In this article, we will delve into five cricketers who made history in ICC World Cups with their exceptional performances.

1. Ben Stokes – 2019

England’s journey to their maiden World Cup title in 2019 was nothing short of spectacular. While several players played pivotal roles, Ben Stokes stood out as a true all-rounder. The Christchurch-born star, playing in his first ODI World Cup, amassed 465 runs and picked up seven wickets in 11 matches.

One of his standout performances came in the opening game against South Africa, where he displayed his mettle with both bat and ball. Stokes scored a crucial 89 off 79 balls and chipped in with two wickets, helping England secure a comprehensive 104-run victory.

2. Shaun Tait – 2007

Shaun Tait was renowned for his sheer pace and ability to dominate batsmen. His journey to the 2007 World Cup was unexpected, as he was a late inclusion due to an injury to Brett Lee.

Australia, known for their aggressive brand of cricket, clinched their fourth World Cup title in 2007, and Tait was a vital part of their pace attack. He finished as the joint second-leading wicket-taker in the tournament, with 23 wickets in 11 matches. His memorable four-wicket haul against South Africa in the semi-final played a crucial role in Australia’s journey to the final.

3. Imran Tahir – 2011

Imran Tahir, the leg-break bowler, had a successful ODI career with South Africa from 2011 to 2019. He made his mark in the 2011 ODI World Cup, starting with a four-wicket haul in his debut match against the West Indies. Despite South Africa’s quarter-final exit, Tahir was impressed with his wicket-taking ability. In five matches of the tournament, Tahir scalped 14 wickets, ending as the second-highest wicket-taker for his team.

4. Tim Southee – 2011

Tim Southee‘s disciplined bowling was a standout feature of the 2011 World Cup. New Zealand reached the semi-finals, thanks in part to Southee’s contributions. Playing his first World Cup, he finished as the second-leading wicket-taker with 18 wickets in eight matches.

One of his memorable performances came against Pakistan, where he dismissed key batsmen and contributed to a resounding 110-run victory.

5. Jofra Archer – 2019

Jofra Archer‘s rapid ascent to international cricket just days before the 2019 World Cup was a remarkable story. England entrusted him with reinforcing their pace attack, and he didn’t disappoint. Archer’s 20 wickets in 11 matches at an economy rate of 4.57 played a pivotal role in England’s maiden World Cup win.

In the opening game against South Africa, he exhibited his potential by taking 3/27, setting the tone for his tournament. His nerve-wracking final over in the championship match against New Zealand, where he successfully defended 15 runs, will be etched in cricketing history as one of the most thrilling moments.

Guyana Amazon Warriors vs Trinbago Knight Riders Match Analysis

Guyana Amazon Warriors and Trinbago Knight Riders, the top two teams in the Caribbean Premier League 2023, will meet again on Sunday morning. Both have been selected for the playoffs and will face off in Qualifier 1 on September 20th. They will, however, be eager to finish the league stage on a high note. Guyana easily won the previous meeting between these two teams. This time, Trinbago hopes to get a win over their opponents before facing them in the qualifiers.

Guyana Amazon Warriors suffered their first setback of the season in their previous match, but they have been playing some outstanding cricket and will look to bounce back in this encounter. Trinbago Knight Riders have a strong batting lineup and will be favored to defeat Guyana Amazon Warriors in this encounter.

Guyana Amazon Warriors vs Trinbago Knight Riders Team Preview & Squads

Guyana Amazon Warriors

Guyana Amazon Warriors suffered a 7-wicket defeat to Saint Lucia Kings. At Providence Stadium, they scored 167-5 after batting first. That wasn’t enough, as Lucia Kings reached the mark in 17.3 overs. It was Guyana’s first loss of the season, so they weren’t too concerned.

The team still has an abundance of match-winners. Saim Ayub has been Guyana’s most successful batsman this year, scoring 304 runs in eight matches with a strike rate of 143 and an average of 43.42. The opener has frequently provided the club with solid beginnings, including a match-winning 62 off 43 balls against Trinbago in the previous encounter.

Shai Hope is another batter to keep an eye on. He’s been a steady presence at third base for the squad, scoring 247 runs in 7 innings with an average of 41.16 and a strike rate of 128.64.

Dwaine Pretorius (10 wickets in 7 innings at an economy of 7.64) and Romario Shepherd (9 wickets in 7 innings at 8.47) were the most consistent bowlers. Gudakesh Motie, a left-arm spinner, has also been a star bowler this year, with 10 wickets at an economy rate of 8.58. He has done an excellent job of containing in the middle overs on these batting surfaces.

Trinbago Knight Riders

Martin Guptill’s knowledge has come in handy for Trinbago this year. The New Zealand opener has looked in command, scoring 261 runs in 9 innings at an average of 37.28 and a strike rate of 116.51.

Nicholas Pooran has been in spectacular form all year and has carried that into the CPL. The strong left-handed batter has blasted 257 runs in 8 innings, with a strike rate of 162.65.

Trinbago would also be pleased that Andre Russell received some much-needed running time in the last encounter. The hard-hitting all-rounder has struggled for runs this season, but he smashed an unbeaten 29 runs off just 13 balls in the chase against Saint Lucia. If Russell starts to play well, Trinbago will be even more dangerous in the playoffs.

Russell’s bowling, on the other hand, has been extremely effective. He is the team’s highest wicket-taker this season, with 11 scalps at an economy of 8.76. Sunil Narine has been as cunning as ever. At 7.20, the deft off-spinner claimed 10 wickets in 8 innings. His four overs might very well determine the match.

India vs Sri Lanka Match Analysis

With four points and a net run rate of 1.753, India won the Super Fours and Sri Lanka will enter this championship game hoping to keep the trophy they earned in 2022.

India and Sri Lanka will square off in the 2023 Asia Cup final on Sunday in Colombo at the R.Premadasa Stadium. At 15:30 local time, the final begins.

We anticipate India to be at full strength in this match despite the fact that they were defeated by Bangladesh on Friday with a modified lineup. Although it won’t be simple, they have the talent to win this match and the competition.

On Thursday, Sri Lanka defeated Pakistan by two wickets to advance to the championship game when it appeared the match was over at one point. They’ll enter this battle with the mindset that they can triumph from any position.

India vs Sri Lanka Team Preview & Squads

India

India made five changes to their lineup for the match against Bangladesh on Friday, resting Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, and Jasprit Bumrah. For the 2023 Asia Cup final, Rohit Sharma is likely to re-incorporate all of the players.

Shubman Gill, 24, who scored a century on Friday, averaged 63.40 in one-day internationals while hitting eight fours and five sixes.

The veteran right-handed top-order batter Virat Kohli, who missed the penultimate Super Fours game because of rest, rejoins the side for this final and has 47 ODI centuries to his credit.

Over the past 18 months, Kuldeep Yadav, a 28-year-old spinner, has solidified his place on India’s ODI side and will benefit greatly from this pitch’s turn.

Sri Lanka

In Sri Lanka’s final Super Fours match, Kusal Perera replaced Pramod Madushan at the top of the order to help the pace bowling attack. We anticipate the same starting XI to be chosen after the thrilling victory over Pakistan to go to the final.

To be the tournament’s leading scorer, Kusal Mendis, the keeper-batter, is still 23 runs away. In his previous four innings, he has recorded two scores of 90+.

Only Kusal Mendis and Shubman Gill have scored more runs than Sadeera Samarawickrama, a middle-order hitter who is 28 years old and averaging 43 in this Asia Cup.

Dunith Wellalage, a talented young left-arm spinner, will want to top his Super Fours match against India, where he took 5-40 and won Player of the Match.

Only one victory resulted from a captain choosing to bat first three times in the Super Fours, hence we anticipate that both captains will want to field first before this game.

The weather in Colombo is expected to be similar to what it has been for the Super Fours, with high humidity and a likelihood of rain occasionally halting play.

The pitch helps the bowlers, and there are occasions when the overhead circumstances help the swing bowlers even if it occasionally appears to be a fine batting surface.

India vs Bangladesh (Match 06) – Highlights

India was unbeaten in the Asia Cup before taking the field against Bangladesh yesterday. But the team that reached the final was brought down by the Tiger army. Despite being eliminated from the Asia Cup, Shakib Al Hasan‘s team managed to make something fruitful in the end.

Bangladesh and India faced off in Colombo on Friday (September 15) afternoon. Batting earlier in the match, the Tigers collected 265 runs after losing 8 wickets in the scheduled 50 overs. In reply, India was all out for 259 runs in 49.5 overs. The red-green team won by 6 runs.

Both teams dominated the match from time to time. Where the last smile appeared on Shakib’s face. However, before long, Bangladesh could have taken control of the match single-handedly. But Shubman Gill stood like a rock in the way. He became a threat to Bangladesh by picking up a century. However, this Indian batsman returned to the dressing room with a personal 121 runs.

But then Axar Patel and Shardul Thakur took over for India. The Bangladeshi bowlers snatched the match away from them. In the end, the Tigers ended the tournament on a winning note against one of the finalists of the Asia Cup, India.

Bangladesh lost the toss and lost some wickets in the beginning. Towhid Hridoy and Captain Shakib led the way even though the Tiger camp was under pressure.

After Shakib returned with 80 runs, Hridoy got out scoring 54 runs. After that, when Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Shamim Hossain failed, Nasum Ahmed pulled Bangladesh back into the game. He was accompanied by Mahedi Hasan and Tanzim Hasan Sakib on his way to score the highest 44 runs in international cricket. Mahedi scored 29 and Tanzim scored 14 runs. Shakib’s team lost 8 wickets and scored 265 runs.

In reply to 266 runs, when India went into bat, debutant Tanzim showed glimpses at the beginning. The right-handed pacer got rid of Rohit Sharma in the first over. Rohit returned with a catch at cover point off the second ball of Tanzim’s first over.

In his next over, Tanzim shined again. This pacer showed Tilak Varma the way to the dressing room. Tanzim dismissed Tilak with a brilliant inswinger in the third over of India’s innings. The young batsman was bowled while trying to ‘leave’ the ball thinking it would go outside the off stump.

After losing 2 wickets, India turned around with the bat of Gill and KL Rahul. These two made a partnership of 57 runs. Mahedi broke the pair and gave Bangladesh a breakthrough. Rahul got out with a catch by Shamim for 19 runs off 39 balls.

Miraz struck before Gill and Ishan Kishan could make a big pair. Kishan became his victim. This Indian batsman scored 5 runs in 15 balls. After that, skipper Shakib sent back Suryakumar Yadav who scored 26 runs in 32.4 overs.

When Ravindra Jadeja got out for 170 runs, the victory turned towards Bangladesh. However, Gill kept India in the lead. The Indian opener returned to the team for 209 runs.

In the end, Shardul Thakur and Axar Patel tried to take India to victory. Both try to score runs. However, Mustafizur Rahman intercepted that attempt. The cutter master broke the pair of Shardul-Axar who scored 40 runs in 27 balls.

When Shardul was out for the team’s 249 runs and Axar walked back to the dressing room for 254, Bangladesh reached the port of victory. Litton Das and Tanzid Hasan anchored the victory for the Tigers. The duo ended the innings as Indian batsman Mohammed Shami got run out with 1 ball to spare.

Top 3 Upsets in ICC World Cup History

The ICC Cricket World Cup has seen its fair share of shocking moments and unexpected outcomes over the years. While cricket is often perceived as a game of unpredictability, certain matches have stood out as true upsets, defying expectations and leaving fans in awe. In this blog post, we’ll delve into the top 5 upsets in ICC World Cup history, analyzing the information from memorable clashes that changed the course of tournaments.

1. India vs. Bangladesh in 2007: A Day of Shock and Awe

The 2007 ICC World Cup witnessed a historic upset when Bangladesh stunned India with a five-wicket victory at Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain, Trinidad. Prior to the match, India, with their star-studded lineup, was the favorite to win convincingly. However, the Bangla Tigers had other plans.

Opting to bat first after winning the toss, India found themselves in a dire situation as they were bundled out for a mere 191 runs. Mashrafe Mortaza led Bangladesh’s pace-bowling attack, capturing four crucial wickets (4/38) and becoming the leading wicket-taker of the match. Mohammad Rafique and Abdur Razzak also contributed significantly, taking three wickets each.

In response to the modest target, Bangladesh lost their opener early but found heroes in Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim, and Shakib-Al-Hasan, who guided them to victory. Rahim sealed the win with an unbeaten 56-run innings. Mortaza was rightfully named the Player of the Match for his exceptional bowling performance.

2. Pakistan vs. Ireland in 2007: Ireland’s Dream Debut

Top 3 Upsets in ICC World Cup History                                                               Pakistan vs. Ireland in 2007: Ireland’s Dream Debut

The 2007 World Cup saw another remarkable upset as Ireland, making their World Cup debut, shocked Pakistan with a three-wicket win in Jamaica. Irish captain Trent Johnston’s decision to field first paid off handsomely.

Pakistan, a formidable side, struggled right from the start and managed a meager total of 132 runs. Ireland seized the opportunity to make history. Niall O’Brien played a crucial innings, scoring 72 off 107 balls, steering his team toward the target. His younger brother, Kevin, and captain Trent Johnston contributed with unbeaten knocks, securing a memorable three-wicket victory. Niall was named the Player of the Match for his match-winning performance.

3. England vs. Bangladesh in 2015: Bangladesh Stuns England

Top 3 Upsets in ICC World Cup History                                                   England vs. Bangladesh in 2015: Bangladesh Stuns England

The 2015 ICC World Cup witnessed another upset, this time with Bangladesh toppling England at Adelaide Oval. England captain Eoin Morgan‘s decision to bowl first proved futile as Bangladesh put up a challenging target.

Despite losing their openers early, Bangladesh rallied back thanks to Mahmudullah’s century and Mushfiqur Rahim’s 89 runs. The duo forged critical partnerships, setting a target of 276 for England.

In response, England showed resilience, with Jos Buttler and Chris Woakes delivering impressive knocks. However, Rubel Hossain’s four-wicket haul proved pivotal as England fell short by 15 runs. Mahmudullah was awarded the Player of the Match for his match-defining century.

These upsets remind us that cricket is a game of uncertainties, where the underdogs can rise to the occasion and create history. As fans eagerly await future World Cups, they’ll undoubtedly hope for more memorable upsets that make this sport even more exciting and unpredictable.

Jamaica Tallawahs vs St Kitts And Nevis Patriots Match Analysis

For Jamaica Tallawahs to have any chance of making the playoffs, they must win this game. Besides, the St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots are out and have nothing left to lose. With the Tallawahs on five points and the Patriots on four, these two teams presently hold the bottom two spots in the league standings.

On Saturday morning in Providence, Jamaica Tallawahs will play St. Kitts & Nevis Patriots in game 27 of the 2023 Caribbean Premier League.

Although the teams above them have defeated the Jamaica Tallawahs in recent games, they should have enough talent on their roster to win this match.

The Patriots won their last game even though they were at the bottom of the standings in the competition. They might pose a threat because they have nothing to lose in their final CPL game of 2023.

Jamaica Tallawahs vs St Kitts And Nevis Patriots Team Preview & Squads

Jamaica Tallawahs

Despite having a strong batting lineup, including long ball threat Chris Green at number 8, the Tallawahs have been unable to post a competitive total. In the lower order, they also have Imad Wasim and Fabian Allen. Jermaine Blackwood, who Tallawahs inserted in the middle order, just demonstrated why he excels in Test matches.

Right now, Brandon Kings is the only person who can lead the Tallawahs. Imad Wasim, Mohammad Amir, and Chris Green are the three most important wicket-takers in the bowling department.

In this lineup, the top-order batsman in form is Andre Fletcher. Evin Lewis has had trouble getting going at the top, but he is one of this team’s most seasoned T20 batsmen and will be important for SNP. Will Smeed and Sherfane Rutherford are two other powerful bats in this lineup who are capable of putting on a standout performance. These two have shown promise and have the ability to alter the middle order.

The erratic play extends beyond the batting. With the ball, the Patriots have also fallen short. When defending 220 runs, they only took two wickets, and when bowling first before that, they gave up 186 runs.

We anticipate that both teams will choose to field first if they win the toss in this game because it has historically been the most popular decision during the 2023 CPL.

At the start of this game, the humidity will be at its lowest, and Saturday’s game is expected to be played in sunny circumstances the entire time.

As the game goes on, we anticipate this pitch to become more accessible for batting. With a morning start, the quick bowlers might receive some help in the early going.
