Unbelievable Runs Galore, Stats & Records of ODI World Cup 2023 so Far
The Men’s ODI World Cup 2023 already gifted us so many records and we can expect more till the end of the tournament. Here in this article, we will discuss the records and stats of this World Cup.
In a breathtaking match against Sri Lanka in Delhi, South Africa amassed a remarkable 428 for 5, setting a new record for the highest team total in a Men’s ODI World Cup. This feat eclipsed Australia’s 417 for 6 against Afghanistan in 2015. The thrilling chase of the 400-run mark wasn’t far either, with South Africa and Australia coming within touching distance – scoring 399 for 7 against England and 399 for 8 against the Netherlands, respectively.
The picturesque venue of Dharamsala witnessed a high-scoring extravaganza when Australia and New Zealand locked horns. Together, they amassed a staggering 771 runs, setting a new record for the highest aggregate in a Men’s ODI World Cup game. This record was further broken in 2023 when South Africa and Sri Lanka combined for 754 runs in Delhi, surpassing the previous record of 714 runs set by Australia and Bangladesh at Trent Bridge in 2019.
In an awe-inspiring chase against Sri Lanka in Hyderabad, Pakistan achieved the highest successful chase in Men’s ODI World Cup history, successfully chasing down a target of 345. This record was previously held by Ireland, who chased 328 runs against England in 2011. Pakistan’s performance was also the highest total ever while chasing until New Zealand narrowly fell six runs short with 383 for 9 against Australia in Dharamsala.
Australia left an indelible mark in the ODI World Cup history books when they defeated the Netherlands by a colossal margin of 309 runs in Delhi. This historic win marked the first instance of a team securing a victory in a Men’s ODI World Cup game by a margin of over 300 runs. It stands as the second-largest win in Men’s ODIs, trailing only India’s 317-run win against Sri Lanka earlier in the same year.
The ODI World Cup has seen some astonishing centuries over the years, and in 2023, this trend continued at a blazing pace. Kevin O’Brien’s century off 50 balls against England in 2011 held the record as the fastest Men’s ODI World Cup century until this year. This record was broken not once but twice during the 2023 edition. First, Aiden Markram played a sublime 49-ball hundred against Sri Lanka, and then Glenn Maxwell stole the spotlight by scoring a century off just 40 balls at the same venue against Netherlands. The 2023 edition has witnessed six of the top ten fastest ODI World Cup hundreds.
So far, the 2023 ODI World Cup has seen a total of 23 centuries, the fourth-highest among the 13 Men’s ODI World Cup editions. It’s just one short of the 24 tons in the 2011 edition and trails the previous edition in 2019 by seven centuries. To surpass the record tally of 38 centuries set in the 2015 edition, the tournament still needs 16 more centuries. Given the extraordinary displays we’ve witnessed, it wouldn’t be a surprise if this record is broken.
