The move, while unexpected, reflects the ICC’s commitment to upholding the autonomy of its member boards and ensuring the smooth functioning of cricket at all levels. The ICC Board clarified that the suspension would not immediately impact the day-to-day operations of cricket. Bilateral and domestic series and tournaments, including the U-19 World Cup, will continue without disruption. However, the annual funding for Sri Lanka will be under ICC control until the suspension is lifted.

The decision to relocate the tournament was prompted by ongoing conflicts between the SLC and Sri Lanka’s sports minister, Roshan Ranasinghe. Allegations of corruption and mismanagement within the cricket board have fueled this dispute, with the government accused of meddling in cricket affairs, a violation of the ICC constitution.
