Cricket Highlights, June 13: WC 2024 (Match 27) – Bangladesh vs Netherlands
Bangladesh vs Netherlands (Match 27) – Highlights
In this article, we will discuss Bangladesh’s significant victory over the Netherlands in their first international fixture in Kingstown in almost a decade. This win brings Bangladesh closer to securing a Super Eights berth at the T20 World Cup 2024.
A standout performance by Shakib Al Hasan, who scored his first fifty in 20 T20I innings, propelled Bangladesh to a solid total of 159 for 5. The Netherlands made a valiant effort in the chase but faltered against the combined bowling prowess of Rishad Hossain, Mustafizur Rahman, and Shakib. This match also marked a crucial turning point in the tournament, impacting the standings and the fate of several teams.
Shakib Al Hasan, finding form after a prolonged dry spell, guided Bangladesh to a total of 159 for 5 with a crucial fifty, his first in 20 T20I innings. The Netherlands made a spirited attempt at the chase, reaching 111 for 3 by the 15th over.
Shakib’s knock was especially significant, marking his first T20I half-century since October 2022 against Pakistan, and his first in a T20 World Cup since 2016. He started cautiously, scoring his first seven runs at a run-a-ball pace before accelerating.
Despite a slowdown in the middle overs, he rotated the strike efficiently, reaching his fifty in 38 balls. He finished strong with back-to-back boundaries off de Leede in the final over, ending unbeaten on 64 from 46 balls, highlighted by nine fours.
Mahmudullah and Jaker Ali also contributed, adding 25 off 21 and 14* off seven balls respectively, helping Bangladesh amass 47 runs in the last four overs. On the Dutch side, Michael Levitt, their leading run-scorer in T20Is since 2024 with 349 runs in nine innings, struggled in the tournament with scores of 1 and 0 in previous matches. He showed promise against Bangladesh but was dismissed for a modest score after hitting a six off Taskin Ahmed.
Levitt’s departure, followed by Max O’Dowd’s, left the Netherlands at 36 for 2 by the end of the powerplay. Vikramjit Singh briefly revived their hopes with an aggressive 16-ball cameo, including sixes off Shakib and Rishad, before being stumped off Mahmudullah. At 69 for 3, the Dutch were still in contention.
A promising partnership between Engelbrecht and Edwards, who added 42 runs in 31 balls, kept the Netherlands in the hunt. However, Rishad Hossain’s introduction in the 15th over turned the tide. He dismissed Engelbrecht and de Leede in quick succession, followed by Mustafizur removing Edwards. Rishad struck again at the start of the 18th over, and despite a late six from Dutt, the Netherlands fell short.
However, Rishad Hossain’s pivotal spell, claiming three wickets in four balls across two overs, turned the game in Bangladesh’s favor. Supported by Shakib and Mustafizur Rahman, the Dutch batting lineup collapsed, losing 4 wickets for just 6 runs in 16 balls.
With 36 needed from the last two overs, Mustafizur’s precision proved decisive, conceding only three runs in the 19th over, effectively sealing the match as the Netherlands finished at 134 for 8.
The result doesn’t guarantee Bangladesh’s progression but significantly boosts their chances, while eliminating Sri Lanka from contention. Despite early setbacks, with the Bangladesh top order struggling against Aryan Dutt’s impressive bowling—he dismissed Najmul Hossain Shanto and Litton Das early on—
Bangladesh managed to recover. Tanzid Hasan’s aggressive play against Kingma and Shakib’s boundaries off van Meekeren and van Beek ensured a strong powerplay finish at 54 for 2.
