All about the Asia Cup 2023

Asian nations compete in the Asia Cup, also known as the ACC Men’s Asia Cup or the ACC Cup, which is a men’s international cricket competition in the Twenty20 International (20 overs) format or the One Day International (50 overs). When the Asian Cricket Council was established in 1983 as a way to encourage goodwill among Asian nations, it was established at the same time. Originally, it was scheduled for the event every two years. The Asia Cup is the only regional cricket continental championship, and the winning team is crowned Asia’s champion. Every couple of years, the One-Day International (ODI) and T20I formats are switched.

The offices of the council were situated in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, where the first Asia Cup was held in 1984 (up till 1995). India stayed out of the competition in 1986 due to extremely tense cricketing relations with Sri Lanka. Due to tense political ties with India, Pakistan boycotted the 1990–1991 tournament, and the 1993 tournament was called off for the same reason. Beginning in 2009, the ACC announced that the event would be held every two years. The ICC has recognized all of the Asia Cup matches as official ODIs.

Asia Cup Format Development

Following the Asian Cricket Council‘s downsizing in 2015, the ICC declared that, starting in 2016, Asia Cup matches would alternate between One Day International and Twenty20 International formats in accordance with the style of upcoming international competitions. Because of this, the 2016 event was the first to be contested in the T20I format and served as a warm-up for the 2016 ICC World Twenty20.
