After three consecutive losses, Mumbai Indians finally got their first victory in the current season of IPL. They beat Delhi Capitals by 29 runs in the 20th match of the season.

 

Chasing 235 runs at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday (April 7), Delhi’s innings stopped at 205 runs after losing 8 wickets at the end of the scheduled 20 overs. Tristian Stubbs’ brilliant innings of 71 runs with 7 sixes and 3 fours went in vain. Gerald Coetzee took the maximum 4 wickets at the cost of 34 runs for Mumbai.

 

Despite losing David Warner in the run chase, Prithvi Shaw and Abhishek Porel put up a fight for the second wicket pair. Warner was the victim of Romario Shepherd after playing a personal 8-run innings for the team’s 22 runs. Then Prithvi and Abhishek made a partnership of 88 runs. Riding on their bat, Delhi scored a hundred in the eleventh over. Then, Jasprit Bumrah broke their pair in the 12th over. Prithvi scored 66 runs in 40 balls with 8 fours and 3 sixes.

 

But Abhishek kept one end. Stubbs started his stormy batting while accompanying him. But Bumrah struck before the pair could become formidable. Abhishek got out in the 15th over after scoring 41 runs off 31 balls with 5 fours. Stubbs kept fighting. The four-six storm kept the team’s hopes alive. But Captain Rishav Pant failed to accompany him. He was a victim of Coetzee by scoring 1 run in 3 balls. The team needed 82 runs off 24 balls to win.

 

Stubbs gave the team 19 runs in the 17th over with two fours and a six. He picked up a fifty off 19 balls with 4 sixes and 3 fours. However, due to the lack of a suitable partner, he could not cause an accident in the match. In the last over, the Protea batter did not get a strike. Coetzee picked up 3 wickets with only 3 runs in that over. Stubbs remained unbeaten on 71 runs off 25 balls with 7 sixes and 3 fours.

 

However, Romario Shepherd made the difference in the match at Wankhede. Batting first, Mumbai had 202 runs on the scoreboard after losing 5 wickets at the end of 19 overs. Shepherd demolished Anrich Nortje in the last over. He scored 32 runs in this over by hitting 4 sixes and 2 fours. In the end, this run was the last for Delhi. Shepherd remained unbeaten on 39 runs off 10 balls with 4 sixes and 3 fours. 

 

However, Team David also played a great role in bringing the team a big collection. He was unbeaten on 45 off 21 balls with 4 sixes and 2 fours. Earlier, two openers Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan gave the team a flying start when they came to bat. Rohit scored 49 off 27 balls with 6 fours and 3 sixes and Ishan scored 42 runs off 23 balls with 4 fours and 2 sixes. Anrich Nortje cost 65 runs by bowling 4 overs despite picking up 2 wickets. 

 

With this match, Mumbai ended their victory drought in the tournament. They got their first taste of victory under the leadership of Hardik Pandya who replaced Rohit Sharma. The franchise lost the first three matches of the season against Gujarat Titans, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Rajasthan Royals.
