What's Holding GT Back in IPL 2024

The Gujarat Titans (GT) champions in 2022 and finalists in 2023 have hit a rough patch early in the IPL 2024 season. With only two wins in their first five matches, GT finds themselves in an unfamiliar seventh place in the points table. Despite victories over Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad, losses to Chennai Super Kings, Punjab Kings, and Lucknow Super Giants have exposed several critical weaknesses in the team’s fabric. Let’s delve into the three primary issues that are currently undermining GT’s performance this season.

A key component missing from GT’s lineup is the prowess of Mohammed Shami. The pace bowler, who claimed the Purple Cap with 28 wickets in 2023, is conspicuous by his absence. Shami’s skill in snagging wickets during the powerplay and death overs was instrumental in GT’s past successes. His absence has left a void that the current bowling lineup struggles to fill. Although Mohit Sharma has stepped up on occasion, his inconsistency has contributed to GT’s defeats. Meanwhile, Umesh Yadav, despite taking six wickets, has been costly with an economy rate exceeding 10.

Adding to the bowling woes is Rashid Khan’s unexpected form slump. The spinner, renowned for his wicket-taking abilities, has only managed five wickets at a less effective rate this season. This downturn in performance from key players is a significant factor in GT’s faltering campaign.

The leadership baton was handed to Shubman Gill after Hardik Pandya’s departure to Mumbai Indians. Gill, though a top-order stalwart, lacks prior leadership experience even at the domestic level. Leading a high-profile IPL team requires not only strategic acumen but also the ability to make quick, impactful decisions on the field. So far, Gill’s conservative approach to captaincy, particularly evident in his bowling changes and team selections, has not favored the aggressive cricket that T20 demands. Notably, players like middle-order batter Abhinav Manohar and Irish pacer Joshua Little, known for their aggressive playing style, have yet to see game time, which could potentially shake things up for the better.

The departure of Hardik Pandya has left a void in GT’s batting lineup as well. Pandya was not just a leader but also a dynamic middle-order batter capable of turning games around in the crucial middle overs. Current skipper Shubman Gill tends to anchor the innings, but the rest of the batting order, including Sai Sudharsan, Kane Williamson, and Vijay Shankar, lacks the aggression needed for the T20 format. The inconsistency of David Miller, who missed the last two games, has further compounded the team’s challenges, leaving a heavy burden on Rahul Tewatia.

The Gujarat Titans are grappling with significant issues that have derailed their campaign early in the IPL 2024 season. The absence of key players like Mohammed Shami, Rashid Khan’s form, inexperienced leadership under Shubman Gill, and a lack of explosive batting options are the main factors contributing to their struggles. To reclaim their position as one of the top teams in the IPL, GT needs strategic changes in both team composition and on-field tactics.
