Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Punjab Kings (Match 69) – Highlights

This match was very important for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) to secure a place in Qualifier 1 in IPL 2024, even though the team ensured the playoffs. However, Pat Cummins’ team made it to Qualifier 1 in the end defeating Punjab Kings (PBKS).

In this year’s IPL, the Sunrisers batted first and made up run festivals. However, they lost when they chased targets on some occasions. But in the last match of the group stage, the big target given by PBKS was easily chased by SRH’s batters.

Batting earlier in Hyderabad on Sunday (May 19), the Punjab Kings collected 214 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in the scheduled 20 overs thanks to Prabhsimran Singh’s brilliant innings of 71 runs. In reply, Sunrisers, who lost Travis Head in the first ball, won the game by another opener Abhishek Sharma’s brilliant innings of 66 runs with 4 wickets and 5 balls in hand.

On this day, PBKS, who won the toss and batted first, got a good start with the bats of two openers, Prabhsimran and Atharva Taide. The pair added 97 runs off 55 balls. Atharva departed after scoring 46 runs off 27 balls with 5 fours and 2 sixes. Rilee Rossouw, who went down on one down, also batted well on this day. He added 54 runs off 31 balls with Prabhsimran in the second wicket partnership. Prabhsimran departed after playing a brilliant innings of 71 runs off 45 balls smashing 7 fours and 4 sixes.

But Shashank Singh was unsuccessful with the bat. He was run out by only 2 runs. At this time, PBKS lost wickets quickly. Rossouw made 49 off 24 balls with 3 fours and 4 sixes to fall prey to Cummins. Jitesh Sharma took PBKS’s score past two hundred by playing a stormy innings of 32 runs from 15 balls with two fours and sixes each.

For Sunrisers, T Natarajan took the highest number of 2 wickets with 33 runs in 4 overs. Besides, Vijayakanth Viyaskanth and Pat Cummins took 1 wicket each.

Chasing a big target, SRH lost the wicket of Travis Head on the first ball of the innings. He was bowled by Arshdeep Singh. Despite losing wickets in the beginning, Sunrisers went on a rampage with the bat. They picked up 84 runs after losing 2 wickets in 6 overs of power play. Rahul Tripathi departed scoring 33 runs off 18 balls, with 4 fours and 2 sixes.

SRH lost the wicket of Abhishek Sharma in the first ball of the 11th over. By that time, 129 runs were accumulated on the team’s scorecard. The storming young man played a tornado innings of 66 off 28 balls, with just 5 fours and 6 sixes before being dismissed. Abhishek completed his half-century in 21 balls today, which is his slowest half-century in this tournament.

After the departure of Abhishek, Nitish Reddy, and Heinrich Klaasen continued to lead the team. Nitish returned to the pavilion with the team 176 runs off the last ball of the 14th over. He scored 37 runs off 25 balls with 1 four and 3 sixes. Shahbaz Ahmed (3) who came to the wicket could not benefit on this day. SRH was under a bit of pressure when Klaasen was also dismissed in the second ball of the 19th over. He scored 42 runs off 26 balls with 3 fours and 2 sixes.

When Klaasen departed, Sunrisers still needed 7 runs to win from 10 balls. Abdul Samad and Sanvir Singh took the team to reach the victory margin with five balls in hand. Samad remained unbeaten with 11 off 8 balls and Sanvir with 6 runs from 4 balls.

Arshdeep Singh took 2 wickets for 37 runs in 4 overs for Punjab Kings. Harshal Patel also consolidated the Purple Cap with 2 wickets. Besides, Harpreet Brar and Shashank Singh took 1 wicket each.

Sunrisers Hyderabad will face Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Qualifier 1 tomorrow (May 21). On the other hand, Rajasthan Royals (RR) will face Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), who are placed fourth in the points table, in the eliminator match on May 22 (Wednesday).
