Which IPL Finals Are Remembered as the Most One-Sided

The Indian Premier League (IPL) finals are a highlight of the cricketing calendar, often featuring nail-biting finishes and dramatic turnarounds. The two best teams of the season face off for the ultimate glory, and historically, these matches have been closely contested, providing fans with edge-of-the-seat entertainment. However, there have been a few instances where one team completely outclassed the other, resulting in some of the most one-sided finals in IPL history. Here, we look at three such finals that stand out for their lopsided nature.

IPL Final 2024

The IPL 2024 final, held at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, will go down in history as the most one-sided final ever. The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) faced off against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in a match that promised much but delivered a one-sided affair.

KKR’s bowlers were in spectacular form, with Andre Russell and Mitchell Starc leading the charge. Russell’s three-wicket haul and Starc’s double strike during the powerplay decimated SRH’s batting lineup. SRH could only muster 113 runs, the lowest team total in IPL final history. KKR’s response was swift and brutal, with Venkatesh Iyer’s quickfire half-century ensuring they chased down the target in just 11 overs. KKR won by eight wickets, clinching their third IPL title in a match that left fans stunned by its brevity and decisiveness.

IPL Final 2022

The 2022 IPL final saw the Gujarat Titans (GT) win their maiden title in dominant fashion against the Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the Narendra Modi Stadium. This final was notable not only for GT’s superb performance but also because it was their first game at their home ground, adding a unique touch to their victory.

RR, after winning the toss and opting to bat, struggled against GT’s bowling attack. Hardik Pandya’s all-round performance was the highlight, as he picked up three crucial wickets, restricting RR to a modest 130/9. GT’s chase was methodical, with Pandya contributing a solid 30-ball 34 and Shubman Gill sealing the victory with a winning six. GT reached the target with ease, winning by seven wickets and 11 balls to spare, making it one of the most comfortable wins in an IPL final.

IPL Final 2020

The 2020 IPL final, played in the UAE due to the COVID-19 pandemic, saw Mumbai Indians (MI) defend their title against the Delhi Capitals (DC) in a largely one-sided contest. MI, known for their dominant performances, did not disappoint their fans in this final.

DC chose to bat first after winning the toss, but they were soon in trouble, thanks to Trent Boult and Jayant Yadav’s incisive bowling. DC found themselves at 22/3 within the first four overs. Though Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer managed to score half-centuries and drag DC to 156/7, it was not enough against a strong MI batting lineup.

In reply, MI skipper Rohit Sharma played a captain’s knock, scoring a magnificent 68. Ishan Kishan’s unbeaten 19-ball 33 provided the finishing touches as MI chased down the target with five wickets in hand and eight balls to spare. MI’s clinical performance ensured they retained the IPL trophy, making it their fifth title overall.
