In this article, we will delve into the highlights of the Afghanistan vs Uganda match in the T20 World Cup 2024, held on June 3. Cricket enthusiasts witnessed a dominant performance at Providence Stadium, where Afghanistan asserted their supremacy with a comprehensive victory.
Afghanistan’s bowlers, spearheaded by Fazalhaq Farooqi’s exceptional spell, decimated the Ugandan batting lineup, setting the stage for a straightforward chase. Despite a valiant effort from Uganda, including a determined partnership for the sixth wicket, Afghanistan’s disciplined bowling and strategic batting ensured a decisive win.
Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran showcased stellar performances, hitting fifties and forming the second-highest opening stand in T20 World Cup history, while Fazalhaq Farooqi achieved his maiden five-wicket haul in T20 Internationals.
Their combined efforts led Afghanistan to a commanding 125-run victory over debutants Uganda in their Group C clash in Guyana. Afghanistan posted an imposing 183 for 5, a total that proved insurmountable for Uganda, who were dismissed for a mere 58 runs in 16 overs.
Farooqi’s outstanding five-wicket haul was complemented by solid bowling performances from Naveen-ul-Haq and captain Rashid Khan, who each took two wickets, decimating Uganda’s batting lineup.
Prior to their late-innings collapse, Gurbaz and Ibrahim had laid a strong foundation for Afghanistan, blasting 18 boundaries within the first 14 overs. Gurbaz scored an impressive 76 off 45 balls, including four sixes and four fours, while Ibrahim contributed 70 runs off 46 balls, striking nine fours and a six. Gurbaz set the tone early.
Lofting Alpesh Ramjani for a six over long-off in the second ball of the innings. Despite an early drop, Ibrahim capitalized on his reprieve by hitting Dinesh Nakrani for four consecutive boundaries in the sixth over, with Afghanistan reaching 66 for 0 by the end of the powerplay.
Their partnership, which added up to 154 runs, came to an end in the 15th over when Ibrahim was dismissed by Masaba. Gurbaz fell shortly after, holing out to deep square leg off Ramjani’s bowling. Uganda then made a significant comeback, with Masaba and Kyewuta taking key wickets and preventing any further boundaries in the last six overs of the innings – a first in T20 World Cup history.
Despite the comprehensive defeat, Uganda found some solace in their bowling recovery, as they managed to restrict Afghanistan to 31 runs for 5 wickets in the last six overs, preventing them from surpassing the 200-run mark. Spin bowler and Captain Brian Masaba, along with fast bowler Cosmas Kyewuta, claimed two wickets each during this phase.
However, the early damage inflicted by Farooqi and Naveen in Uganda’s innings proved too much to overcome, as Uganda collapsed to 18 for 5 in the powerplay, with Farooqi taking two wickets in the first over itself.
Riazat Ali Shah and Robinson Obuya offered brief resistance, adding 29 runs for the sixth wicket, but Farooqi’s return to the attack ended their stand. He dismissed Riazat, Masaba, and Obuya in quick succession, completing his five-for and leaving Uganda reeling.
Rashid Khan wrapped up the innings by taking the final two wickets, ensuring a dominant victory for Afghanistan and underscoring the gap between the two teams in this World Cup encounter.
