PS-W vs MR-W (11th Match) – Highlights In this article, we will discuss the 11th match of the Women’s Big Bash League between Perth
In this article, we will discuss the rain-affected T20 World Cup match between Scotland and England, held on June 04 at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown. This match was highly anticipated as Scotland aimed to make a strong statement against the defending champions. Despite a promising start by Scottish openers Michael Jones and George Munsey, who propelled their team to 90 without loss, the weather played a spoilsport, leading to a frustrating wash-out. The match was marked by heavy rain interruptions and notable performances, with the contest ultimately abandoned due to persistent showers.
Scotland made a strong statement at this T20 World Cup, with openers Michael Jones and George Munsey reaching an impressive 90 without loss in an innings truncated by heavy rain. Unfortunately, the weather ultimately spoiled their opening match against the defending champions, England.
The match faced an untimely interruption due to a rain squall, which, combined with a damp spot on the pitch, delayed the start by 55 minutes. Scotland, having won the toss and chosen to bat, managed to reach 51 for naught after the powerplay.
When another heavy downpour halted proceedings just two balls later, Jones was unbeaten on 30 from 20 balls, and Munsey had benefited from a reprieve due to a Mark Wood no-ball.
When play resumed after the skies cleared and the ground was sufficiently dried, the match was reduced to 10 overs per side. Jones and Munsey added 39 runs in the remaining 3.4 overs, bringing their total to 90 without loss and setting England a revised target of 109 to win.
However, the rain returned promptly after their innings, causing the match to be abandoned. Wood’s late inswing with the first ball had Munsey on the defensive, but Munsey quickly recovered, smashing Wood’s fourth delivery over mid-on for four.
A key moment came when Munsey, on 16, skied a Wood delivery towards deep third, only for a no-ball siren to negate Buttler’s catch due to Wood’s overstepping.
Scotland reached 34 without loss by the end of the fifth over, with Jones making a significant impact in Chris Jordan’s over by hitting an 87-meter six that shattered a solar panel on the stadium roof. Jones then struck two more boundaries off Jordan’s next deliveries, propelling Scotland to 49 for naught by the end of the powerplay. Just two more runs were added before a lengthy rain delay resumed.
Upon resumption, with 3.4 overs left, Adil Rashid was introduced. Jones continued his aggressive approach, launching Rashid’s first ball over long-on for six. Munsey supported with a four and a six in the over, accelerating the scoring. Despite Jordan’s expensive earlier over, England relied on his death bowling, but Munsey sent the second ball of his over for six over backward square. Rashid bowled a tight final over, giving away just four runs before Jones finished the innings with a boundary through midwicket, taking Scotland to 90 without loss.
The rain interrupted again just as Scotland completed their innings. Munsey had earlier survived an England review for a caught-behind off a Rashid googly, and Jones narrowly avoided a run-out when his bat got stuck in the pitch as he ran to beat a direct hit. Despite completing the innings, the persistent rain meant the match could not continue.
Jofra Archer, playing in Bridgetown for the first time internationally, delivered a two-over spell amid the rain interruptions. Jones capitalized on extra width in Archer’s first over, scoring 10 runs off it. Archer’s second over was more controlled, featuring a tight leg-cutter and a short ball that glanced Jones’ glove but fell short of Buttler.
Scotland – 90 (10.0)
England – Not yet bat
