In the 25th match of The Hundred Men’s Competition, Birmingham Phoenix defeated Welsh Fire by 5 wickets at Cardiff. Welsh Fire posted 146/8, with Tom Kohler-Cadmore top-scoring with 54. Sean Abbott starred for Phoenix, taking 4/16. In reply, Phoenix chased down the target in 93 balls, thanks to half-centuries from Moeen Ali (60) and Ben Duckett (54*). The victory, secured with 7 balls to spare, boosted Phoenix to third place in the standings. Abbott was named Player of the Match for his excellent bowling performance.
Moeen Ali and Ben Duckett delivered stellar half-centuries to lead Birmingham Phoenix to a crucial five-wicket victory over Welsh Fire at Sophia Gardens. This win dashed Welsh Fire’s chances of advancing to The Hundred Eliminator and propelled Phoenix to third place in the standings.
The English left-handers Moeen and Duckett combined for a dominant opening partnership of 114 runs in 73 balls as they chased a target of 147. Moeen scored his highest score in The Hundred with a 46-ball 60, hitting eight fours and a six. He was in excellent form. When he top-edged a delivery from Matt Henry, David Payne caught him, ending his innings.
Jamie Smith replaced Moeen at the crease and looked in excellent touch, scoring 12 runs from his first three deliveries. However, his stay was cut short when Haris Rauf bowled him with a sharp inducker. Phoenix then lost quick wickets, with Liam Livingstone, Dan Mousley, and Jacob Bethell all departing as they tried to accelerate the run-rate. Despite the wobble, Duckett remained composed, scoring an unbeaten 54 off 31 balls. Benny Howell hit the winning runs with seven balls remaining, securing a vital victory for Phoenix.
Earlier in the match, Australian allrounder Sean Abbott was the star with the ball for Phoenix, taking 4 for 16. His performance was instrumental in restricting Welsh Fire to 146 for 8, marking his second four-wicket haul of the season. Stephen Eskinazi provided a solid start for Welsh Fire with a 21-ball 30, but the rest of the top order faltered. Luke Wells was deceived by an Adam Milne slower ball, while Joe Clarke and Tom Abell both fell to Abbott’s sharp bowling.
Tom Kohler-Cadmore injected some life into the innings with a quickfire 54 off 32 balls, including five boundaries and a six. He launched an assault on Tim Southee, hitting three consecutive fours before being dismissed by Abbott. Abbott later claimed his fourth wicket by having David Payne caught by Southee.
Matt Henry managed to hit two boundaries off his fellow New Zealander Milne in the final set of the innings, but it wasn’t enough as Welsh Fire’s hopes of making the knockout stage were extinguished.
