Mumbai Indians (MI) have got defeated for the second consecutive match in the IPL 2023. Rohit Sharma’s team could not give a good fight against Chennai Super Kings at Wankhede Stadium. Ajinkya Rahane’s brilliant half-century gave Chennai Super Kings (CSK) an easy win.
Super Kings won the game against MI on Saturday (April 8) with 7 wickets and 11 balls in hand. MI scored 157 runs losing 8 wickets in the scheduled 20 overs at Wankhede Stadium. In reply, Ajinkya Rahane’s 19-ball half-century helped CSK reach the port of victory easily.
Super Kings won the toss and sent MI to bat first. Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan got off to a flying start for the hosts. They scored 38 runs before losing the wicket of Rohit Sharma in the last ball of the fourth over. Captain Rohit scored 21 runs off 13 balls.
After scoring 61 runs in 6 overs of Powerplay, MI lost their second wicket scoring 64 runs. Ishan Kishan was sent back to the pavilion by Ravindra Jadeja after scoring 32 runs off 21 balls with the help of 5 boundaries. After that, the five-time champions team could not form any big pairs. Cameron Green (12) and Suryakumar Yadav (1) failed to score well with the bat.
Tilak Varma also returned to the dressing room with 22 runs off 18 balls. Tim David played an inning of 31 runs off 22 balls. But Tristan Stubbs also failed to cash in. He scored only 5 runs in 10 balls. In the end, MI was able to score 157 runs courtesy of Hrithik Shokeen’s 18-run innings off 13-ball.
Ravindra Jadeja took the highest number of 3 wickets conceding 20 runs in 4 overs for Super Kings. Mitchell Santner and Tushar Deshpande got 2 wickets each. Sisanda Magala took the remaining wicket.
In reply, Super Kings lost the wicket of Devon Conway in the first over of the innings being bowled by Jason Behrendorff. Even then the team could not open the account of runs. However, Ajinkya Rahane made an uncharacteristic storm by going down to bat at one down. He scored a half-century in just 19 balls. Ajinkya played a devastating inning of 61 off 27 balls, hitting 7 fours and 3 sixes, before being dismissed by Piyush Chawla.
Scoring 82 runs in 8 overs, the Super Kings have taken the match into their hands. After Ajinkya’s departure, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shivam Dube started scoring runs at a slightly slower pace. When Shivam Dube departed with 28 off 26 balls in 14.2 overs, the team needed 33 runs from 34 balls to win.
Then Gaikwad and Ambati Rayudu scored the required runs with 11 balls in hand. Gaikwad scored 40 runs in 36 balls with 2 fours and 1 six. Rayudu scored 20 runs off 16 balls with the help of 3 boundaries. Kumar Kartikeya, Piyush Chawla, and Jason Behrendorff took 1 wicket each for MI.
After winning two out of three matches, Chennai Super Kings have climbed to the 4th position in the points table. With two consecutive defeats, Mumbai Indians are now in the 8th position in the standings. The two teams will face each other at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai in the second leg on May 6. That game will be the 1000th one in IPL history.
