Exploring the Stats and Records from India vs. Zimbabwe 2nd T20I

The second T20I between India and Zimbabwe in Harare was a memorable match for several reasons, with records being shattered and new milestones being set. Abhishek Sharma’s scintillating century was the highlight, but the match featured several other noteworthy performances and statistical feats. Let’s delve into the details and explore the remarkable stats and records from this historic game.

The record books now include Abhishek Sharma, the first Indian to score a century in men’s international cricket with three straight sixes. This feat is unique and has only a few parallels in international cricket. Shubman Gill had achieved something similar when he reached his double century in an ODI against New Zealand in 2023 with three back-to-back sixes, but Abhishek’s accomplishment in the T20I format is unparalleled.

Abhishek needed just 46 balls to reach his hundred, making it the joint-third-fastest century for India in men’s T20Is. When Rohit Sharma made a century off of just 35 balls against Sri Lanka in 2017, he set a record for the fastest century. Suryakumar Yadav is second with a 45-ball century, also against Sri Lanka in 2023, while KL Rahul has a 46-ball hundred against West Indies in 2016.

It took Abhishek only two innings to score his maiden T20I century. This is the quickest by any player from a Full Member country. He joins an elite club of players who have achieved this milestone so rapidly, alongside Evin Lewis, who had a duck and a century in his first two T20I innings, and Richard Levi, who scored a ton in his second T20I innings.

Abhishek Sharma was particularly brutal against Zimbabwe’s spinners, scoring 65 runs off just 28 balls at an astonishing strike rate of 232.14. This surpassed Yuvraj Singh’s record of 57 runs against Pakistan in 2012 as the most runs scored by an Indian against spin in a T20I. Abhishek smashed six sixes and four fours during his innings against the spinners.

After being dropped in the eighth over, Abhishek’s strike rate surged to an incredible 317.39. He amassed 72 runs off his last 23 balls, including seven sixes and five fours. This late onslaught significantly boosted India’s total and showcased Abhishek’s ability to accelerate the scoring rate dramatically.

India’s 234 for 2 in Harare marks the highest score achieved by any team against Zimbabwe in a men’s T20I match. It also ranks as the second-highest T20I total by any team in Zimbabwe, behind Zimbabwe’s own 236 for 5 against Singapore in 2022. This high total underscores India’s dominant batting performance throughout the match.

India scored an incredible 161 runs in their last ten overs, the third-highest in men’s T20I cricket where ball-by-ball data is available. This explosive finish is only behind Nepal’s 192 runs in the final ten overs against Mongolia in 2023 and Japan’s 161 runs against China earlier this year. The flurry of runs in the death overs was pivotal in setting an imposing target for Zimbabwe.
