In response to the unrest, several participating nations, including cricketing powerhouses like Australia, India, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom (England and Scotland), issued travel advisories against visiting Bangladesh. These advisories were a clear indication of the concerns regarding the safety and security of their citizens.
The ICC had to take these warnings seriously, as they directly impacted the feasibility of hosting the tournament in Bangladesh. With multiple countries unwilling to send their teams to Bangladesh, the ICC had little choice but to explore alternative venues.
Against all odds, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and the government doubled down, rolling the dice with last-ditch efforts to keep the hosting rights. They even brought in the United Nations as their ace up the sleeve, aiming to reassure the international community that all safety bets were covered.
However, these efforts were ultimately unsuccessful in convincing the participating countries to reverse their travel advisories. Geoff Allardice, chief executive of the ICC, emphasized that the decision to not hold the event in Bangladesh was not taken lightly, while also recognizing the BCB’s efforts.
With Bangladesh off the table, the ICC had to reshuffle the deck and find a new venue fast. The UAE stepped up as the house favorite, boasting a winning streak in hosting international cricket showdowns. Having already co-hosted the Men’s T20 World Cup in 2021 after India’s hand was forced by COVID-19, the UAE proved it knows how to play its cards right when the stakes are high.
Additionally, the UAE has hosted several ICC qualifier tournaments, further demonstrating its capability to organize major cricketing events. This experience made the UAE a reliable option for the Women’s T20 World Cup.
