What Are the Major Changes in MLC 2024's Second Season?

Cricket in America? Yes, it’s happening again! Major League Cricket (MLC) is back for its second season, ready to showcase another exciting competition. As cricket continues to gain popularity in the United States, let’s explore the major changes and updates in MLC 2024.

The second season of MLC begins with an exciting rematch of the inaugural season’s final. MI New York will face the Seattle Orcas on July 5th at 2 pm local time. This highly anticipated match will take place in Morrisville, North Carolina. This eagerly awaited showdown sets the stage for an electrifying tournament ahead.

In its inaugural season, MLC followed a single round-robin format, culminating in knockout matches. However, this season introduces an expanded structure with each team playing seven league games before the knockout stages. This change not only increases the number of matches but also adds more excitement and opportunities for teams to showcase their skills. The final is scheduled for July 28th, with matches taking place in Morrisville and Dallas.

Teams and Ownership

MLC continues to feature six teams, with plans to expand to ten in the future. The teams are:

MI New York

Texas Super Kings

Los Angeles Knight Riders

Seattle Orcas

Washington Freedom

San Francisco Unicorns

Interestingly, several teams have strong connections to the IPL. MI New York, Texas Super Kings, and Los Angeles Knight Riders are the American counterparts of their respective IPL franchises. Seattle Orcas, co-owned by a consortium led by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, includes GMR, part-owners of Delhi Capitals.

Tech billionaire Sanjay Govil is the owner of Washington Freedom, while the creators of Junglee, Venky Harinarayan and Anand Rajaraman, are leading a consortium that owns San Francisco Unicorns. The league has attracted significant investment from Silicon Valley, making it a $120 million startup with added contributions from other tech moguls.

Star-Studded Lineup

Despite the recent conclusion of the thrilling World Cup final in Barbados, the Major League Cricket (MLC) 2024 has successfully attracted a plethora of star-studded cricketers. The lineup includes several prominent members from the Australian T20 World Cup team, such as Pat Cummins, Glenn Maxwell, Travis Head, Tim David, and Marcus Stoinis, all of whom are eagerly heading to the United States to showcase their talents.

Pat Cummins, in particular, has garnered significant attention with his signing to the San Francisco Unicorns. Expressing his enthusiasm, Cummins highlighted the multifaceted allure of this opportunity.

This move not only underscores the growing international appeal of MLC but also emphasizes the league’s potential to blend the sport with broader professional and personal growth opportunities for players. The inclusion of these high-profile athletes signifies a pivotal moment for cricket in the United States, promising to elevate the competition and captivate a diverse audience.

In addition to the Aussies, some of South Africa’s World Cup contingent, including David Miller, Kagiso Rabada, Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen, and Anrich Nortje, will also participate. Caribbean cricket stars Nicholas Pooran, Sunil Narine, and Andre Russell will bring their flair to the competition. New Zealand’s Trent Boult and Lockie Ferguson will also join the action, representing the cream of Kiwi talent.
