Islamabad United vs Quetta Gladiators Match Analysis
With a victory in the last group stage match, Quetta Gladiators could have secured a spot in the top two, sending Multan Sultans, who are now atop the table, into the dreaded playoffs. Unfortunately, that was not meant to be.
In actuality, the Sultans were too strong for Gladiators, and they won decisively by 79 runs to guarantee their position at the top of the tree. To finish their group stage matches, Quetta Gladiators will now play Islamabad United, who stunned Sultans by chasing a game by 229 runs. Imad Wasim performed brilliantly to lead his club over the finish line on the final ball of the game, with United needing 48 runs off 4 overs to win and maybe advance to the playoffs.
Early in the season, Gladiators defeated United in Lahore, but rain caused a postponement of their Rawalpindi match. Their meetings have always been close and hotly contested, as seen by the overall head-to-head score of 9 to 9. It seems like this elimination round won’t be much different from the last one based on their performance in the past and present form.
Islamabad United vs Quetta Gladiators Team Preview & Squads
Islamabad United
In the second round, they tried in vain to defend below-par totals against the Sultans, and in the third match, against the Gladiators. In their fourth game against Zalmi, United’s batsmen demonstrated improved intent and game understanding as they led the chase until the 18th over when they needed to reach 202 to win. Nevertheless, they managed to lose still, ultimately losing by eight runs.
They knew the door was closing on them when their spot in the knockouts was in jeopardy, and they supported that realization with outstanding bat and ball performances. Except for the postponed game, they won four of the final five games to take third place in the standings. They have successfully destroyed teams twice thanks to their excellent chasing technique: once against the Multan Sultans and once against the reigning champion Lahore Qalandars.
They have, however, found it difficult sometimes to bat first. A few things may be going on, such as not understanding what constitutes a solid score on the strip and not understanding the terms of play. With Agha Salman, Colin Munro, and Shadab Khan all in form, they are good at batting, but they still need to improve greatly at bowling, particularly with Naseem Shah and Shadab Khan still appearing shaky.
It has been a difficult journey thus far for team Quetta, going from even with Multan Sultans at the midway point in the table to being humiliated by Sultans in the last group stage match with just three more points added to their total in the second half.
The Pacers are still out of their league and their spin-heavy assault hasn’t been able to maintain its level of consistency. And because of this, the opposition has been able to escape and score a total that is higher than the Gladiators’ patchy batting lineup. Khawaja Nafay, aside from his outstanding 60* counterattack against Lahore Qalandars, has been an average player.
Interestingly, his meager total of 177 runs from 9 games is good enough for third position on Quetta’s list of best scorers this season, directly behind Saud Shakeel (323 runs from 9 games) and Jason Roy (252 runs from 9 hits). The middle order is criticized for not scoring a lot, and the captain, Rilee Rossouw, is a major letdown.

Islamabad United vs Quetta Gladiators outfield report
National Stadium, Karachi
Islamabad United has won four of its five games when trailing, so their strategy for the elimination match should come as no surprise. If the Quetta Gladiators win the toss, they will prefer to send the opposition to bat because they have had better success chasing down teams.
The weather is expected to hold up nicely for the important game. Any score above 185 would present a problem for the pursuing team because Karachi decks have proven to be difficult to score runs on. Even though it’s a knockout game and the pursuing side would be under a lot of pressure to score points, anything less would be challenging to defend.
