Hosts Mumbai Indians (MI) defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by 7 wickets and 16 balls in hand at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Monday (May 6). Sunrisers who batted earlier today collected 173 runs losing 8 wickets in the storm of Pat Cummins at the beginning and end of Travis Head. In reply, Suryakumar Yadav scored a brilliant century to give MI the win.

 

With this win, MI has moved to number nine in the run rate with 4 wins in 12 matches, leaving behind the Gujarat Titans (GT). As a result, Hardik Pandya’s team’s hopes for the playoffs are burning in a mathematical battle.

 

Travis Head gave Sunrisers a stormy start after losing the toss. SRH scored 56 runs after losing the wicket of Abhishek Sharma in the power play. Abhishek scored 11 runs off 16 balls. After breaking the opening pair, they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Travis Head was dismissed for 48 off 30 balls, with 7 fours and 1 six.

 

Nitish Reddy (20 from 15 balls) and Marco Jansen (17 from 12 balls) scored double-digit runs in the middle order. Besides, Shahbaz Ahmed scored 10 runs. Sunrisers capitalized on the fightback mainly due to a storming innings by late skipper Pat Cummins. The SRH captain remained unbeaten with 35 runs off 17 balls hitting only two fours and two sixes.

 

Hardik and Piyush Chawla took 3 wickets each for MI. Anshul Kamboj and Jasprit Bumrah took the remaining 2 wickets each.

 

In response, MI lost 3 wickets within 31 runs. Two openers, Ishan Kishan 9, and Rohit Sharma scored 4 runs. Naman Dhir could not open the account of runs despite playing 9 balls in one down.

 

Suryakumar and Tilak Varma took the team’s lead now of such a disaster. In the beginning, both played slowly and handled the disaster. After that Tilak played patiently but Suryakumar stormed. The number one batsman in the T20 rankings did not show the least respect to the bowlers of Sunrisers. Their unbroken partnership added 143 runs, the fourth-highest partnership in IPL history.

 

At the end when MI needed 25 runs from 24 balls to win, Suryakumar was still 19 runs away from the century. Realizing the matter, Tilak started to strike Suryakumar. Tilak struck Suryakumar with a single in the first ball of the 17th over. Suryakumar hit a single, two fours, and a six in the next five balls to reach 96 runs.

 

Tilak struck Suryakumar again with a single on the first ball of the next over. Suryakumar ended the match with a century by hitting a six off T Natarajan’s second ball of the over. He played a great innings of 102 runs off 51 balls with 12 fours and 6 sixes. This is the second century of his IPL career. He scored a 49-ball century against GT on the same ground last season.

 

Tilak scored 37 runs off 32 balls with worthy company. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Pat Cummins, and Marco Jansen took 1 wicket each for the Sunrisers.
