The record for the highest runs in one match in the ODI World Cup was held by Bangladesh-Australia earlier. Whereas, Sri Lanka-South Africa broke that record this time. These two teams have built a mountain of runs in the fourth match of the World Cup 2023 held in India. The Lankans lost against South Africa as the Proteas set a colossal target.
South Africa created a history at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Saturday (October 7). The Proteas set the record for the highest runs in World Cup history by scoring 428 runs. In response, the Lankans’ innings came to a halt at 326 runs when they went down to bat. The Proteas left the field with a big win of 102 runs.
In the 2019 World Cup, the two teams scored 714 runs in the Bangladesh-Australia match. Bangladesh’s innings stopped at 333 runs in response to Aussie’s 381 runs. Sri Lanka-South Africa broke that record by a big margin. These two teams collectively scored 754 runs in their first match in this World Cup.
Rassie van der Dussen, Quinton de Kock, and Aiden Markram were the Proteas’ craftsmen behind the big collection. All three have gotten centuries. This is the first time in the history of the ODI World Cup that three batsmen from the same team have scored centuries. Kusal Mendis, Charith Asalanka, and Dasun Shanaka batted well for the Lankans. All three met fifty but none could touch the magical figure of three.
Sri Lanka won the toss in Delhi yesterday. The Lankans took the first wicket within the first two overs as they started to bowl. But then the disaster started. Shanaka’s team could not take any more wickets till the 30th over.
Africans have taken the opportunity well. De Kock and Van der Dussen put up a 204-run partnership for the second wicket. De Kock scored 100 runs in 12 fours and 3 sixes. Even Van der Dussen could not last long after scoring a century. He was returned to the pavilion by Dunith Wellalage after scoring 108 off 110 balls.
However, instead of decreasing, the run rate increased. Markram-Heinrich Klaasen’s 78-run partnership eventually led the Lankans to be disoriented. Klaasen was dismissed for 32 but Markram made history. He became the owner of the fastest century in the history of the World Cup by reaching the three-digit mark in just 49 balls.
Markram scored 106 off 54 balls smashing 14 fours and 3 sixes. In the end, David Miller (39) and Marco Jansen’s (12) cameo innings helped South Africa to score 428 for 5 wickets. Temba Bavuma’s team left the field making history.
In response, Sri Lanka lost the wicket of opener Pathum Nissanka for the team’s 1 run. But instead of being under pressure, Kusal Mendis started to give it back to the Proteas. The Lankans began to see hope in his fifty-off 25 balls.
Kagiso Rabada dashed Sri Lanka’s hopes in the 13th over. He returned to the dressing room after playing a devastating innings of 76 runs from 42 balls. After two runs, another wicket fell. Sadeera Samarawickrama (23) got out by Gerald Coetzee. The Lankans were under pressure after losing 4 wickets for 111 runs.
Charith Asalanka and Shanaka did not give up. The left-handed batsman got out after playing a fighting innings of 79 runs off 65 balls with 8 fours and 4 sixes. Wellalage was out after one run. Shanaka continued the fight alone despite being under pressure again.

In the end, Kasun Rajitha’s innings of 33 runs narrowed the gap of defeat for the Lankans. In the end, Sri Lanka’s innings stopped at 326 runs.
