BAN vs WI (2nd Test) – Highlights In a thrilling Test match, BAN triumphed over the WI by 101 runs in the second Test
Ireland surprised everyone in the 2011 World Cup by chasing 328 runs set by England. The Irish set the record for the highest run chase in the World Cup winning that game. After an era, Pakistan broke that record and made a new history.
In Hyderabad on Tuesday (October 10), Abdullah Shafique and Mohammad Rizwan scored a couple of centuries to chase down Sri Lanka’s 345 runs with 10 balls in hand as Pakistan won by 6 wickets.
This is now the highest run-chasing victory record in the history of 13 editions of the ODI World Cup. At the same time, Babar Azam’s team has captured the record of highest successful run chasing in Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. Earlier, South Africa had the record of winning by chasing the highest 249 runs against India in this field.
Pakistan did not get off to a good start chasing a tough target at this venue. Two top-order batsmen returned to the dressing room within 37 runs of the team. Opener Imam-ul-Haq was out for 12 runs and captain Babar Azam departed for 10 runs.
Both were shown the way to the pavilion by Dilshan Madushanka. Rizwan increased the pressure on the Lankan camp by pairing with Abdullah Shafique on the third wicket. In the two, Pakistan reached 213 runs in 33 overs. Shafique was dismissed on the first ball of the 34th over after scoring 113 runs off 103 balls with 10 fours and 3 sixes.
However, Rizwan left the field to ensure the team’s victory by holding the wicket on one end. He remained unbeaten on 131 runs off 121 balls with 8 fours and 3 sixes. Saud Shakeel, who facilitated the team’s victory by putting up a 95-run partnership with Rizwan for the fourth wicket, was dismissed scoring 31 off 30 balls. And in the end, Iftikhar Ahmed was unbeaten playing 10 balls to score 22 runs.
Dilshan Madushanka took the maximum number of 2 wickets for the Lankan bowlers. Maheesh Theekshana and Matheesha Pathirana took 1 wicket each.
After winning the toss and batting first, Kusal Mendis and Sadeera Samarawickrama scored a double century for Sri Lanka to score 344 runs for the loss of 9 wickets after the allotted 50 overs. However, the beginning of the day was not good for them. Kusal Perera went back to the dressing room before scoring any runs, but the remaining two batsmen of the top order shined well.
Pathum Nissanka picked up a fifty before being the victim of Shadab Khan, who formed a quick century partnership with Kusal Mendis. With 7 fours and 1 six, 51 runs came off 61 balls from his bat. Mendis and Sadeera batted aggressively for the third wicket pair. The team’s score stood at 218 runs in 29 overs. Hasan Ali stopped Mendis, who made 122 runs off 77 balls with 14 fours and 6 sixes.
Standing at the other end, Sadeera also picked up a century. He played a great innings of 108 runs before leaving the field for the team’s 335 runs. His innings was arranged in 89 balls, where he hit 11 fours and 2 sixes. With that, Sri Lanka got the fourth-highest team collection in Hyderabad.
Hasan Ali took the highest number of 4 wickets for Pakistan at the cost of 71 runs. Haris Rauf took 2 wickets at the cost of 64 runs. Besides, Shaheen Afridi, Mohammad Nawaz, and Shadab Khan scalped 1 wicket each.
Earlier, Pakistan had won their first match in this World Cup mission. On the other hand, Sri Lanka lost both matches they’ve played.
