Cricket Highlights, 29 April: IPL 2023 (Match 38) – Punjab Kings vs Lucknow Super Giants

Punjab Kings vs Lucknow Super Giants (Match 38) – Highlights

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) defeated Punjab Kings (PBKS) by 56 runs in the second-highest team total match in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and climbed to the 2nd position in the points table. Earlier in 2013, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) scored 263 on the day of Chris Gayle’s (175) individual highest run in recognized T20 history.

Batting first in Mohali on Friday (April 28), the Super Giants put up a record score of 257 for the loss of 5 wickets in a batting rage of Kyle Mayers, Marcus Stoinis, and Nicholas Pooran. In reply, the Kings were all out after scoring 201 runs in 19.5 overs.

At the end of 8 matches, Gujarat Titans (GT) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have 10 points, but LSG has left them behind as they are leading in net run rate. They are in 2nd place in the standings. On the other hand, PBKS is in the 6th position in the points table with 8 points playing an equal number of matches.

In this match, the Kings stumbled in the beginning after coming down to chase the mammoth target. They lost skipper Shikhar Dhawan for the team’s 3 runs and Prabhsimran Singh for 31 runs and they were under pressure. However, Atharva Taide and Sikandar Raza tried to bring the team back into the fight in the third wicket pair.

Raza got out when the team total reached 109 runs. His innings ended up scoring 36 off 22 balls. Atharva got out in the 13th over of the innings scoring 66 runs off 36 balls. In the end, Liam Livingstone scored 23 off 14 balls, Sam Curran made 21 off 11 balls and Jitesh Sharma got out with 24 runs off 10 balls. But those innings were of no use as they could not score runs by the required run rate.

Yash Thakur took the utmost number of 4 wickets for Super Giants. Naveen-ul-Haq picked up 3 wickets in controlled bowling. Besides Ravi Bishnoi got 2 wickets and Stoinis got 1 wicket.

Earlier, after losing the toss and going to bat first, LSG collected 257 runs for 5 wickets after the stipulated 20 overs. They narrowly missed out on seizing the record for the highest runs. RCB holds the record for the highest runs in an innings of IPL. They scored 263 against Pune Warriors in 2013. The previous record of second-highest runs is also held by RCB. They scored 248 runs against Gujarat Lions in 2016.

In Mohali, KL Rahul failed to get the expected runs in the first over, but another opener, Kyle Mayers, made up for it. PBKS bowlers were overpowered by this Caribbean batter. Rahul was out for 41 runs, but Mayers continued his batting rampage. He completed his half-century with 20 balls.

Mayers was not giving Ayush Badoni an opportunity to play who came field in one down. He was dismissed for a personal 54 runs. He hit 7 fours and 4 sixes in just 24 ball innings. Both were sent back to the pavilion by Kagiso Rabada. Then Badoni and Stoinis made up a pair. In front of them, the king’s players could not find any clues to stop them.

Livingstone broke the Badoni-Stoinis pair. The 23-year-old Badoni was caught off Rahul Chahar while hitting him on the leg side. He scored 43 runs off 24 balls with an equal number of 3 fours and sixes. But that did not even stop the LSG storm.

Nicholas Pooran came and gave great company to Stoinis. After scoring 73 off 40 balls, Stoinis left the field after being out by Sam Curran. His innings had 6 fours and 5 sixes. Pooran’s innings ended on 45 runs off 19 balls. Among the rest, Deepak Hooda scored 11 runs and Krunal Pandya scored 5 runs.
