The Tigers’ tour of New Zealand ended with a defeat. However, Bangladesh aimed to win the series in New Zealand by making history. But that didn’t turn up. Bangladesh lost the series by getting defeated in the last match by the DLS method.
Bangladesh and New Zealand entered the field in the third and final T20I on Sunday (December 31). Bangladesh lost the toss at Mount Maunganui and started to lose wickets from the start. In the end, the innings of the Tigers ended scoring 110 runs after losing all the wickets in 19.2 overs. Then New Zealand made 95 for 5 in 14.4 overs and it started to rain. Later, the Kiwis won by 17 runs in the DLS method.
Bangladesh had a chance to create history by winning the series for the first time by defeating them on New Zealand soil. After blowing out the hosts in the first match in Napier, the second match at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui was washed out by rain. History would have been made if the last match had been won. But it was not possible to win the series due to the loss of 17 runs in the DLS system.
The capital of the fight was only 110 runs. However, Mahedi Hasan-Shoriful Islam signaled quite well that Mount Maunganui’s Bay Oval is a bowler’s paradise. They sent back half of the Kiwis’ batting strength to the dressing room in 49 runs.
Shoriful also bowled Finn Allen, who became fearsome. But soon after, James Neesham and Mitchell Santner added some quick runs for the Kiwis to take them closer to victory. Neesham remained unbeaten on 28 off 20 balls and Santner on 18 off 20 balls.
Mahedi brought back memories of Napier after New Zealand went into bat for a target of 111 runs. In that match too, he struck at the start of the Kiwi’s innings. This time, he came to bowl and took 2 wickets in the beginning. He picked up the wickets of Tim Seifert and Daryl Mitchell.
Seifert was stumped for 16 runs in the second over. He scored 1 run. Then Mitchell got out after 26 runs. He was caught by Najmul Hossain Shanto on Mahedi’s ball scoring just 1 run. Then Shoriful gave a blow to the Kiwi camp. Glenn Phillips was bowled by one of his brilliant deliveries. He also scored 1 run off 4 balls for the team’s 30 runs.
Mark Chapman was run out after the team scored 38 runs. He also scored 1 run in 5 balls. Shoriful bowled Finn Allen, who became fearsome on the team’s 49 runs. He scored 38 runs off 31 balls. After that, there were no setbacks. The hosts left the field winning the match.
Earlier, New Zealand’s bowlers took maximum advantage by winning the toss and sending Bangladesh to bat. Batters of Bangladesh were batting at a slow pace and continuing to lose wickets from the beginning. Soumya Sarkar started the procession, falling lbw off Tim Southee. He scored 4 runs off 4 balls. Rony Talukdar got LBW by Ben Sears. He scored 10 runs off 10 balls.
Bangladesh team’s second wicket fell on 31 runs, third on 41 runs, and fourth on 59 runs – like these wickets were tumbling one after another. Captain Shanto scored the highest 17 runs. 16 runs came from the bat of Towhid Hridoy. Afif Hossain scored 14 runs.
Rishad Hossain scored 10 runs. Besides playing, Shamim Hossain instead of Litton Das scored only 9 runs. Mahedi scored 4 runs off 13 balls. In the end, Bangladesh got all out for 110 runs with 4 balls left. Santner took the maximum number of 4 wickets for the Kiwis and Tim Southee, Adam Milne, and Ben Sears picked up 2 wickets each.
Mitchell Santner was adjudged player of the match for his outstanding spell with the ball. In addition, Shoriful Islam was selected as the player of the series after taking a maximum of 6 wickets in three matches in the T20I series.
