Oval Invincibles secured their third win in four matches in The Hundred this year, thanks to an exceptional all-round performance by Sam Curran. They triumphed over London Spirit by 30 runs, with Curran’s efforts proving pivotal in both batting and bowling.
With an important 51 off 22 balls, Curran steered the Invincibles to an impressive total on a tough pitch. He then shattered the Spirit’s chase hopes with a remarkable five-wicket spell, which included a hat-trick, effectively sealing the match.
Opting to bat first Invincibles struggle initially. The Spirit’s bowlers exploited the conditions well, leaving the visitors at 46 for 2 halfway through their innings. Olly Stone bowled out Will Jacks, while Liam Dawson dismissed Jordan Cox, who had been recently selected for the England Men’s Test squad.
Dawid Malan and Billings managed to hit a few significant shots before Malan was caught on the square-leg boundary off Matt Critchley for 38 off 29 balls. Billings, unable to find his rhythm, retired himself out to bring in the in-form Donovan Ferreira, but it was Curran’s explosive half-century, including three consecutive sixes off Nathan Ellis, that propelled the Invincibles to a respectable 147 for 5.
In their chase, the Spirit navigated the powerplay without losing a wicket, with Keaton Jennings and Michael Pepper steering them to 35 for 0. However, the Invincibles’ spin attack soon trapped Jennings lbw, Adam Zampa had Pepper caught on his first ball, and Nathan Sowter bowled Ollie Pope, putting the Spirit under pressure.
Dan Lawrence and Shimron Hetmyer attempted to revive the Spirit’s innings, and with 56 needed from the final 30 balls, the game was still in the balance. But Zampa, who finished with figures of 3 for 22, dismissed both Hetmyer (20 off 21) and Lawrence (27 off 18), further denting the Spirit’s chances.
Despite Andre Russell’s efforts to power the Spirit to victory, Curran’s hat-trick, only the third in The Hundred men’s competition history, ensured a memorable win for the Invincibles, showcasing one of the tournament’s finest individual performances.
