We will delve into the key moments that defined the game, from the disciplined bowling and batting strategies of the USA to the critical errors made by Pakistan in the Super Over.
This in-depth analysis will highlight how the USA managed to tie the scores at 159-all, force a Super Over, and ultimately triumph over one of the strongest teams they have ever faced on the global stage. Join us as we recount the thrilling sequence of events that led to this monumental upset.
Pakistan struggled to score only 35 runs in the powerplay. Netravalkar’s economical bowling was crucial, with three overs yielding just eight runs during this phase. Kenjige returned in the middle overs to deliver crucial blows, including the dismissal of Shadab Khan, who was Pakistan’s most fluent batter with 40 off 25 balls.
Azam Khan’s unfortunate dismissal, falling prey to a swift slider on the very first ball, marked another disappointing start at a crucial time for Pakistan. Together, the lethal duo of Netravalkar and Kenjige wreaked havoc, claiming a total of 5 wickets for just 48 runs in their combined eight overs.
Netravalkar set the stage ablaze with a spectacular catch at slip by Steven Taylor, sending Rizwan packing in just the second over. Following suit, left-arm spinner Nosthush Kenjige sent Usman Khan back to the pavilion in the very next over, leaving Pakistan reeling at 14 for 2.
The duo maintained relentless pressure throughout the match, consistently snatching crucial wickets at pivotal junctures, keeping Pakistan on their toes and their scoreboard in check.
The USA muzzled Pakistan’s experienced top order, bringing their big hitters under control, and then delivered a measured batting performance to tie the scores at 159-all, forcing the game into a Super Over. In this high-pressure scenario, the USA displayed veteran composure, while Pakistan seemed to crumble.
Despite this being the USA’s first major act of giant-killing on the global stage, their batting performance was calm and calculated. Their openers remained together for five overs, accumulating 36 runs.
Monank Patel was the star of this partnership, scoring 50 off 38 balls with seven fours and one spectacular six off Shaheen Shah Afridi to reach his half-century. Though he was dismissed soon after, he left the USA in a strong position. Even with Monank and Gous out and 35 balls remaining, Pakistan still had to bowl well, with the USA needing 49 runs to win.
Pakistan’s bowlers, Naseem Shah, Shaheen Afridi, and Mohammad Amir, performed admirably in the death overs, leaving the USA needing 15 runs off the final over. Haris Rauf, bowling effective yorkers, reduced the target to 12 off 3 balls. Jones’ pivotal six off a low full-toss set the stage. With five runs needed off the final ball, Nitish Kumar’s four over mid-off leveled the game in a thrilling finish.
The dynamic duo of Captain Monank Patel and Andries Gous formed a formidable second-wicket partnership, orchestrating a 68-run alliance in just 48 balls. Their collaboration served as the cornerstone of their chase.
Mohammad Amir, Pakistan’s seasoned bowler, bowled three wides in his Super Over, with the US batters capitalizing on the extra runs each time. Mohammad Rizwan further conceded an extra run on an overthrow off the last of these wides. These lapses allowed the USA to score 18 runs off their Super Over.
Faced with a daunting target, Pakistan’s challenge became even tougher with Saurabh Netravalkar’s brilliant bowling. Netravalkar, who had already impressed in regular play by taking 2 for 18 from his four overs, continued his form.
In the Super Over, conceding just one boundary. Pakistan managed to score four leg byes off the penultimate delivery, giving Shadab Khan a chance to level the scores if he could hit a six off the last ball.
In the Super Over, the USA maintained their composure while Pakistan faltered. Both teams hit a four each, but Pakistan’s errors in terms of wides and overthrows cost them dearly. The USA emerged victorious in the Super Over, scoring 18 to Pakistan’s 13.
