Ashwin’s Discontent: Controversy Surrounding Mankad’s Out

The Big Bash Mankad Controversy

In the fast-paced world of cricket, controversies often arise, sparking debates and heated discussions among players, coaches, and fans alike. One such controversy recently unfolded in Australia’s franchise-based T20 league, the Big Bash. It revolved around a dismissal that left Melbourne Renegades batsman Thomas Rodgers at the center of attention, courtesy of Melbourne Stars bowler Adam Zampa.

A Disputed Decision

The incident, which occurred during a Big Bash match, saw Adam Zampa dismissing Thomas Rodgers using a Mankad dismissal – a mode of dismissal where the bowler removes the bails at the non-striker’s end before delivering the ball, if the batsman leaves the crease early. While the on-field umpires deemed it not out, Melbourne Stars’ coach, David Hussey, made it clear that even if the batsman was out, they wouldn’t have upheld the appeal.

Ashwin’s Response to Insult

This statement by David Hussey did not sit well with Ravichandran Ashwin, the seasoned Indian spinner. Ashwin expressed his displeasure, feeling insulted by Hussey’s comments. In his view, if there is a desire to withdraw an appeal, it should be done before referring the decision to the third umpire. Ashwin also emphasized that such comments were disrespectful to the bowlers and suggested that coaches should refrain from speaking on matters that the bowler and captain have chosen to remain silent about.

Ashwin’s Stance

In an interview, Ashwin shared his perspective, stating, “There has been significant debate and criticism surrounding Mankad dismissals recently. However, my opinion on this matter is that I don’t agree with retracting an appeal. If the intention is to withdraw the appeal, why involve the third umpire for a decision? It renders the dismissal meaningless and controversial. The bowler executed a legitimate dismissal as per ICC rules, and it’s a standard cricketing process. After all the commotion, the bowler and captain chose not to comment, so why should the coach intervene and potentially insult the bowlers? It goes against the spirit of cricket.”

Responsibility of Batsmen

Ashwin firmly believes that the responsibility for Mankad dismissals lies with the batsmen. It occurs when a batsman leaves the crease before the bowler delivers the ball. He further stated, “Whenever a Mankad dismissal happens, it triggers a barrage of criticism, often questioning the bowler’s ethics. But why should that be the case? Why should all bowlers bear the brunt of blame when the batsman is at fault? Why leave the crease before the bowler bowls? These are questions we should ponder. Unfortunately, the criticism is usually directed solely at the bowler.”

The Mankad Controversy’s History

Notably, in 2019, Ravichandran Ashwin himself was at the center of a Mankad controversy when he dismissed Jos Buttler in an Indian Premier League (IPL) match. The move garnered widespread criticism and debate. Mankad dismissals have been a part of cricket history for a long time, but they are often accompanied by controversy. The International Cricket Council (ICC) recently legalized this mode of dismissal after extensive discussions and criticism.

The Mankad dismissal continues to be a contentious topic in the world of cricket. As Ashwin raises valid points defending the bowlers’ actions, the debate surrounding this mode of dismissal is likely to persist. Cricket enthusiasts and experts must engage in thoughtful discussions to find a balanced perspective on the matter.
