Bangladesh cancels one Test match against Afghanistan

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) recently announced a modification to their upcoming home series against Afghanistan, citing a tight schedule as the reason for scrapping one Test match. Originally, Bangladesh was set to host Afghanistan for a series consisting of two Tests, three ODIs, and three T20Is. However, with a focus on white-ball cricket and preparations for the upcoming 50-over World Cup in India, the BCB decided to reduce the Test matches to one.

Jalal Yunus, the Chairman of BCB’s cricket operations, revealed that the decision to reduce the Test matches was driven by the tight schedule ahead of the World Cup. The BCB aims to concentrate more on limited-overs cricket as they gear up for the global tournament later this year. By reducing the Test matches against Afghanistan, they can allocate more time and resources to fine-tuning their white-ball skills in preparation for the World Cup campaign.

Yunus acknowledged the importance of planning and preparation for the World Cup, expressing the need to focus on specific venues and match schedules. The BCB had intended to organize a 10-day skill camp in either Bengaluru or the UAE. However, due to the delayed announcement of the World Cup schedule, they have not been able to finalize the camp’s location. If an overseas skill camp is not feasible, the BCB will make arrangements for training within Bangladesh to ensure thorough preparation ahead of the prestigious tournament.

As the host of the World Cup, India, in collaboration with the International Cricket Council (ICC), will prepare the tournament schedule. Yunus emphasized the significance of receiving the schedule promptly to facilitate effective planning for Bangladesh’s preparation. The BCB is eager to know the venues and dates of their matches to ascertain their logistical position and tailor their training programs accordingly.

Yunus acknowledged that obtaining the World Cup schedule would enable the BCB to make informed decisions regarding skill camps and other preparatory activities. With the Asia Cup also on the horizon, time is of the essence, and having clarity on the World Cup schedule is vital for Bangladesh’s strategic planning.

While Yunus expressed a desire for an overseas skill camp, he reassured that not being able to train abroad would not pose a significant obstacle to their preparation. The BCB intends to utilize the ODI matches scheduled ahead of the World Cup as valuable opportunities to fine-tune their skills and build momentum leading up to the mega tournament. They view these matches as an integral part of their preparation process, even if an overseas camp is not feasible.

Bangladesh’s immediate focus lies on their series against Ireland in England. The team left for England on May 1 to participate in three ODIs scheduled to take place at Chelmsford on May 9, 12, and 14. These matches hold significance as they are part of the World Cup Super League, providing valuable points towards qualification for the tournament. Bangladesh’s decision to adjust their schedule by scrapping one Test match against Afghanistan reflects their commitment to preparing for the upcoming World Cup.
