Can SRH Tackle Their Spin Troubles to Win the Crucial Game against RR

As Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) prepares to face Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the crucial second qualifier of IPL 2024, they are grappling with spin troubles, especially after Wanindu Hasaranga’s injury exposed their middle-over vulnerabilities. With Mayank Markande, Vijayakanth Viyaskanth, Shahbaz Ahmed, and Washington Sundar struggling, SRH must strategize meticulously to overcome these challenges. Let’s analyze their current situation and potential strategies to turn their fortunes around.

SRH’s spin attack has been lackluster this season, reflected in their poor economy rate and average. The spinners have an economy rate of 11.20, the worst among all teams, and an average of 54.38. These numbers are concerning, especially with the possibility of dewy conditions at Chepauk, which could further hamper their performance. The middle overs (7-16) have been particularly problematic, with an overall team economy rate of 9.98 in this phase, also the worst among the ten teams.

Viyaskanth, a promising legspinner from Jaffna, has shown potential in the Lanka Premier League (LPL) and impressed figures like Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara. However, in the IPL, his performance has been underwhelming, with just one wicket in ten overs at an economy rate of 8.60. Despite the small sample size of three games, SRH might need to gamble on his potential, hoping he can replicate his domestic form on the bigger stage.

An alternative approach could involve Jaydev Unadkat, who, despite primarily being a pacer, can bowl off breaks and off-cutters, effectively acting as a quick spinner. Unadkat’s slower variations and experience could be crucial on the Chepauk pitch, which has favored such bowlers in the past. Utilizing Unadkat could also free up an overseas slot for an additional batter, adding depth to the lineup.

SRH’s batting could benefit from the inclusion of an extra overseas batter. Aiden Markram and Glenn Phillips are the primary candidates, each bringing unique strengths to the table.

Markram, a mainstay in SRH’s lineup, offers stability in the middle order, crucial in high-stakes games. In contrast, Phillips, who hasn’t played this IPL season, presents a risk but his explosive batting and off-spin could be game-changers. If SRH fields Phillips, they must be confident in his ability to quickly adapt and perform under pressure.

Adding variety to the bowling attack, especially with left-arm options, could be another strategy for SRH.

Jansen has struggled with form and rhythm, which makes him a less appealing choice for a high-stakes game. His three matches this season did not yield significant results, and with Chepauk not offering much swing, his effectiveness could be limited.

Farooqi, yet to play a game this season, is another left-arm seamer who could be considered. His inclusion would be a left-field choice, potentially bringing an element of surprise. However, like Phillips, his lack of game time could be a significant drawback.

Given the circumstances, Unadkat emerges as a pragmatic choice. His ability to bowl slower balls and off-cutters, combined with his experience, could make him a valuable asset on the Chepauk pitch. Pairing him with T Natarajan could create a formidable left-arm duo, providing SRH with the variety and control they need in the middle overs.
