Kohli returned to form with a century against Afghanistan last year. He got his 71st career century. Then he scored a hundred against Bangladesh at the end of last year. His 72nd career century came from his bat in their third and final ODI. At the beginning of this year, he scored his 73rd century in the first match at home against Sri Lanka. After that, Kohli scored a century in the last match and made a total of 74 centuries. However, while praising Kohli’s century, Gautam Gambhir criticized India’s loss to Bangladesh.
India came to play a bilateral series against Bangladesh last year. They played three ODIs and two Tests. Team India won the Test series against Bangladesh by a margin of 2-0 but lost the ODI series by 2-1. After losing their first two matches against Bangladesh in ODIs, India confirmed the series loss. But in the last match, Ishan Kishan’s brilliant double century and Virat Kohli’s century saved the Indian team from a whitewash in the ODI. Recently, India’s former opener Gautam Gambhir suddenly brought up the topic of India’s loss against Bangladesh in the discussion of commentators on television.
In that discussion, when Sanjay Manjerekar was excited about Kohli’s hundred, Gambhir brought up the issue of India’s loss. He said, “A few days ago we lost the ODI series while visiting Bangladesh. We should not forget that. We seem to forget this failure in the Sri Lanka series. Individual performance is of course essential for the team to win. But to play consistently well, team performance is more important.”
Gambhir also said, “Individual centuries are important for the team’s victory. If someone looks at his record and sees 50 or 100 centuries, then he will be delighted. But we should not forget our bitter experiences. But we could not win the ODI series against Bangladesh. This is a big lesson for India. We should be careful from now on, the World Cup is ahead.”
India came with a full-strength team against Bangladesh. But they could not win the ODI series. Gambhir feels that they should not sit idle after the success of the Sri Lanka series at home. He said, “India’s full-strength team played against Bangladesh but still they lost. I think we should not forget that failure. We should think again about that loss. There is no point in being complacent about the series against Sri Lanka. Let us not forget the failure. India should be alert now”.
In the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka at home, India won the series by whitewashing Sri Lanka defeating Sri Lanka in 3 consecutive matches. Kohli was at the peak of form in this series. The ODI World Cup will be held in India at the end of the year. Rohit Sharma’s India is desperate to win the World Cup at home. After the series with Sri Lanka, India will play against New Zealand Team India is desperate for success there as well.
