Top cricketers from different countries can be seen in IPL, BPL, Big Bash leagues. But as India’s top cricketers are not allowed to play for franchises in foreign countries, they are not seen playing in any franchise league other than the Indian Premier League (IPL). This time the former Indian national team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni can play in South African franchise SA T20. League commissioner Graeme Smith wants him in the South African franchise. Dhoni is no longer banned as he retires from international cricket.
Even though he retired from international cricket, Dhoni continued to play in the IPL. According to the BCCI agreement, Dhoni cannot play for any outside franchise even if he plays domestic cricket in the country. Accordingly, Dhoni is not allowed to play in SA20 if he plays IPL. He can play in the South African league only after saying goodbye to this domestic league. But Smith has not given up hope of getting Dhoni yet.
In the press conference, Smith said, “There is no cricketer like Dhoni.
If he plays in the tournament, his value increases many times. It is great to have a cricketer like him in any tournament. We are going to create a competitive cricket league. If someone like Dhoni plays in this league, it will be great for us. SAT Twenty League will also increase in importance. He is a legend of cricket, playing cricket at this level for so many years he is enriching the game. In his career, he has performed consistently and won the team, leading India to the World Cup. If any opportunity arises to get Dhoni, I will definitely contact Dhoni. I am not giving up hope of getting him. “
There are reasons not to give up hope of getting Dhoni. Six teams of South African franchises are owned by Indians. The Indian IPL franchise owners also own this South African franchise. In this context, Smith also said, “Board of India organizes such tournaments brilliantly, we have a very good relationship with the BCCI. They have experience in doing big tournaments like IPL successfully. So we always want to have a good relationship with the BCCI. We are trying to give cricket fans a great tournament from our side.”
It should be noted that Mahendra Singh Dhoni retired from international cricket in 2020. Now the former Indian captain plays only for Chennai Super Kings in IPL. There were earlier rumors that Dhoni could play for the South African franchise. But he could not play because of the BCCI rules. Time will tell if Dhoni will finally play according to Smith’s wishes.
