Nepal’s national team cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane was accused of rape last year. This 22-year-old leg spinner from Nepal got bail this year after being in police custody for a long time. He returned to the national team after getting bail in the rape case. He is entering the field with the tri-series against Scotland and Namibia. The country’s cricket board banned him from cricket after allegations of rape against him last year. He was sent to jail in November last year. Then he was released on bail in January this year. After being released on bail, the country’s cricket board Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) lifted the ban on Lamichhane.
It was thought that he would be returned to the national team after the ban was lifted. Later he was also called to the training camp. But common people expressed anger about this. Various protests and debates continue. The storm of criticism continues to blow around. There is even talk of boycotting the tri-series in the country. However, despite so much criticism, the country’s cricket board has returned the country’s biggest star cricketer to the team.
Meanwhile, Lamichhane expressed his relief on returning to the team, “I love playing cricket. Sometimes I was away from cricket for a long time due to these incidents. It feels good to be back in the jersey of the national team. It is always an honour to represent the country. I want to give my best for the country. It feels like my rebirth in my cricket career. All my focus now is only cricket. Not thinking about anything else”.
However, CAN General Manager Britanth Khanal has clarified some things about the lifting of Lamichanne’s ban. At the time of lifting the ban, he said, “The ban has been lifted as per the court’s order. He has to comply with the obligations ordered by the court. Even if he goes to play outside the country, he can go only if he complies with the court’s conditions.”
This young cricketer from Nepal has achieved a lot in a short cricket career. He is the only cricketer from Nepal who has played in all the famous franchise leagues. Played in the world-famous IPL league. Lamichhane has also played in Australia’s Big Bash, Pakistan’s CPL, and Bangladesh’s BPL. He was even the captain of the country’s national team when he was banned from cricket.
Ending all speculation, he is returning to 22 yards. The tri-nation series will start in Kirtipur next Thursday. His cricket career is starting again with this series.
