The UP T20 League 2024 is set to be an exciting spectacle, featuring exceptional cricketing talent from Uttar Pradesh. Among the participants, five bowlers are
In a surprising turn of events, Sydney Sixers have welcomed back Afghanistan legspinner Izharulhaq Naveed for the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) season, following the withdrawal of England’s Rehan Ahmed. Ahmed, who was initially set to play a crucial role in the Sixers’ campaign, had to step back due to national team commitments in the West Indies.
Naveed, an unexpected pick at the inaugural BBL draft last year, showcased his talent by claiming nine wickets in nine games with an impressive economy rate of 7.37. His stellar performance not only earned him recognition but also secured his position at the top of the list when the Sixers were scouting for a replacement. The return of Naveed adds depth to the Sixers’ spin options, where he will join forces with veteran Steve O’Keefe, Test offspinner Todd Murphy, and the promising 20-year-old allrounder Joel Davies.
Coach Greg Shipperd expressed his enthusiasm about Naveed’s return, stating, “We are fortunate to have been able to bring back a player of Naveed’s talent, and we know he will fit in with our group.” Shipperd also highlighted the positive trajectory of the spinning group, emphasizing the combination of O’Keefe’s experience, Murphy’s skills, and Davies’ promising left-arm off-spin complemented by his batting and fielding prowess.
The Sixers, however, bid farewell to Nathan Lyon, who moved to Melbourne Renegades. Lyon will face his former team in the opening game of the season at the SCG before embarking on Test duty. On a positive note, Steven Smith will be available for the opening match, and the Sixers hope to see him in action for the derby against Sydney Thunder on January 12. However, Murphy will miss the opening game as he has been selected for the Prime Minister’s XI to face Pakistan.
Rehan Ahmed joins a list of England players withdrawing from the BBL, including Harry Brook. Additionally, Zak Crawley, signed with Perth Scorchers, will experience a delayed arrival due to his involvement in the ODI leg of the West Indies tour until December 10. Meanwhile, Joel Davies, part of the Sixers’ spin arsenal, is currently with the Australia T20I squad in India for a learning and development opportunity, acting as a net bowler for the final days of the trip.
The BBL is witnessing several overseas signings, with England left-armer David Payne joining Adelaide Strikes as the replacement for Rashid Khan, and allrounder Liam Dawson signing with Melbourne Stars for the first three games of the campaign. Payne, a part of Perth Scorchers’ title-winning side last season, is expected to bring his wicket-taking ability, fielding skills, and positivity to the Strikers’ outfit, as confirmed by head coach Jason Gillespie.
As the excitement builds for the start of the tournament on December 7, several clubs are expected to announce further overseas additions in the coming days, intensifying the competition and adding a global flair to the BBL season. Izharulhaq Naveed’s return to Sydney Sixers adds a new dimension to the team’s spin department, promising an exciting BBL season ahead for the fans.
