Top Records Broken in ICC World Cup 2023 AUS vs AFG Clash

What a show the cricketing world has seen at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Australia was going to taste their third loss in this World Cup at least it seem to be they are going to lose. Afghanistan was an inch away from the victory. But it is Mad Maxi of Australia who saved them by shattering numerous records. Also, Australia secured a spot in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 semifinals. Now let’s find out what records Maxwell broke in this historic win of Australia.

The standout feat of the match was Glenn Maxwell’s historic double century, making him the first Australian batter to achieve this milestone in ODI cricket. His remarkable innings of 201 off 128 balls not only propelled Australia to victory but also etched his name alongside Martin Guptill and Chris Gayle as the third double-centurion in World Cup history.

Maxwell’s 201 not only secured a win but also marked the highest individual score while chasing in ODIs. His innings surpassed Fakhar Zaman’s 193, showcasing Maxwell’s prowess in setting records even under the pressure of a run chase. Notably, he achieved the second-fastest double century, taking only 128 balls to reach the milestone.

Maxwell continued his onslaught by breaking the record for the highest individual score by a No. 6 batter in ODIs. His 201 surpassed the previous record held by Kapil Dev (175 vs. Zimbabwe). The innings was a masterclass in boundary hitting, with Maxwell registering the second-highest number of boundaries (31) in a World Cup innings, trailing only behind Martin Guptill.

Known for his aggressive style, Maxwell’s 43 sixes in World Cups now rank him third in the all-time list, with only Chris Gayle and Rohit Sharma ahead of him. His boundary-scoring spree showcased the impact he had on Australia’s innings.

In a truly extraordinary display of partnership prowess, Glenn Maxwell and Pat Cummins orchestrated a cricketing symphony, amassing a staggering 202 runs for the eighth wicket. This remarkable feat surpasses the erstwhile record of 138*, held by Andrew James Hall and Justin Kemp against India in 2006.

While the spotlight was on Maxwell, Afghanistan’s Ibrahim Zadran displayed his prowess by becoming the first Afghan player to score a World Cup hundred. His innings of 129 off 143 balls marked the third-highest score by any batter against Australia in World Cups.

At 21 years and 330 days, Zadran became the fourth youngest player to score a World Cup century, joining the ranks of Paul Sterling, Ricky Ponting, and Avishka Fernando. Additionally, his fifth ODI century now ties him for the second-most centuries for Afghanistan in ODIs.

Afghanistan’s total of 291/5 became their highest World Cup score, showcasing the team’s growing competence on the global stage. On the other hand, Australia’s successful chase of 293/7 marked the highest successful run chase at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai in ODIs.
