The fourth iteration of Sri Lanka’s Twenty20 franchise cricket event, the Lanka Premier League (LPL), will take place in 2023. It started on July 30 and will end on August 20, 2023, according to the program. The competition includes five teams competing in three abroad places. The league is managed by Sri Lanka Cricket. The reigning champions are the Jaffna Kings. The previous versions of the Lanka Premier League used the draft to choose players, but this season was the first to employ an auction.

If Colombo Strikers’ Babar Azam inspired the Lanka Premier League into full throttle with his record century as the tournament run-up switched from Colombo to the hill terrain of Pallekelle, Wanindu Hasaranga de Silva, a local all-round hero, stole the show in the final countdown, pushing bottom-of-the-table B-Love Kandy to the top of the points table.

Kandy, who had started the tournament with zero points, has flipped the scales to take control at the top with six points from three straight wins following the Pallekelle leg.

Avishka Fernando took Dambulla Aura to a comfortable 7-wicket the win over Galle Titans with 15 balls remaining and to the top of the points standings by dismissing the Titans for 133 for 9 off 20 overs in yesterday’s match of the Lanka Premier League 2023 Tournament at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium. Fernando scored an unbeaten 70 off 49 balls, going over the top three times and hitting an equal number of boundaries.

The right-hander battled it out to see his team through after captain Kusal Mendis had fallen for 18 with the score 47 and Sadeera Samarawickrama for 25, on a surface that Fernando would later characterise as challenging to bat on when he earned his Player of the Match award.
