What Are Virat Kohli’s Best IPL Seasons by Strike-Rate

Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) Virat Kohli had a stellar 2024 IPL season, leading the charts with 741 runs at an average of 61.75 in 15 games. Despite his efforts, RCB fell short in the Eliminator against Rajasthan Royals (RR). Kohli, the IPL’s all-time leading run-scorer, became the first to surpass 8000 runs this season. Although his initial strike rate drew criticism, his overall strike rate of 154.69 in 2024 was a significant improvement from his career IPL strike rate of under 132. As fans debate his 2024 strike rate, here’s a closer look at his top five IPL seasons by strike rate.

IPL 2024: SR 154.69

Amidst the debate and criticism about his strike rate, 2024 turned out to be Kohli’s best season in terms of strike rate. He scored 741 runs at an impressive strike rate of 154.69 in 15 games, the second-highest run tally in a single season in his career. Kohli’s performances included five half-centuries and a century, playing a crucial role in RCB’s turnaround in the latter half of the season. After a dismal start with seven losses in eight matches, RCB won their next six games to secure a playoff spot. Despite their spirited comeback, RCB’s journey ended in the Eliminator, marking their 17th season without an IPL title.

IPL 2016: SR 152.03

Virat Kohli’s 2016 IPL season is widely regarded as the best ever by a batter in the tournament’s history. He scored a record-breaking 973 runs at an average of 81.80 and a strike rate of 152.03 across 16 games. Kohli not only amassed an unprecedented volume of runs but did so at a blistering pace, scoring four centuries and eleven 50+ scores. His extraordinary performance helped RCB finish second in the points table with eight wins from 14 games and advance to the final. However, they were defeated by SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the summit clash.

IPL 2010: SR 144.81

Few might recall that one of Kohli’s best strike rates came in 2010, during the early years of the IPL. He scored 307 runs at a strike rate of 144.81 in 16 games, his first season crossing the 300-run threshold. Batting in the middle and lower-middle order, Kohli’s average was 27.90, with one half-century. His role allowed him to play more aggressively, boosting his strike rate. That year, RCB finished fourth in the points table but lost in the semi-finals to Mumbai Indians (MI).

IPL 2019: SR 141.46

Virat Kohli’s 2019 season was unusual. Despite having an underwhelming campaign by his standards—he only managed 464 runs in 14 games—he struck out at an astounding 141.46 percent. Only three times that season did he score more than 50 runs, but he still had a good strike rate. The way RCB performed was similar to their 2024 campaign; they lost their first six games before winning five of their final eight. With 11 points from 14 games, RCB finished at the bottom of the table despite their late rally. Eighth place on the Orange Cap standings went to Kohli.
