As Pakistan prepares to face Bangladesh in a two-match Test series starting August 21 in Rawalpindi, cricket enthusiasts are abuzz with anticipation about the promising young talent, Muhammad Huraira. The 22-year-old has been making waves in domestic cricket and is set to debut in the international arena. Here’s everything fans should know about Huraira before the series kicks off.
Muhammad Huraira’s journey in cricket began to gain prominence during the 2020 Under-19 World Cup. Despite a disappointing exit for Pakistan, who lost to India in the semi-final, Huraira showcased his potential. He had a challenging outing, being dismissed for just four runs in the semi-final, but made a significant impact in the quarter-final against Afghanistan. Huraira scored a crucial 64 off 76 balls, earning the Player of the Match award and helping Pakistan secure a six-wicket victory.
The domestic statistics of Muhammad Huraira are truly remarkable. In December 2021, during the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, he became the second youngest batter to score a triple-century in first-class cricket, following the legendary Javed Miandad. Playing for Northern, Huraira’s 311 off 343 balls, including 40 boundaries and four sixes, was instrumental in Northern’s victory by an innings and 170 runs over Balochistan. This feat not only demonstrated his exceptional batting prowess but also his stamina and concentration, qualities essential for Test cricket.
Huraira’s talent did not go unnoticed by the Pakistan selectors, as he was included in the squad for the series against Sri Lanka in 2023. Unfortunately, he missed out on making his debut. Pakistan won convincingly, but the absence of Huraira on the field left fans and selectors eager for a chance to see him in action. With the Bangladesh series approaching, it is expected that Huraira will finally get the opportunity to showcase his skills on the international stage.
Huraira’s recent performance in the unofficial Test against Bangladesh A in July 2024 further solidified his reputation. Scoring a double-century, he amassed 218 runs off 247 balls, including 25 boundaries and a six, before Pakistan A declared their innings at 467/3. His innings helped Pakistan A secure a 148-run victory. Such performances in unofficial matches often serve as a prelude to success in international cricket, and Huraira’s display was certainly promising.
Muhammad Huraira’s first-class record speaks volumes about his potential. With 39 first-class matches under his belt, he has scored 3431 runs at an impressive average of 56.24, including 14 fifties and nine centuries. His consistency and ability to score big runs in domestic cricket make him a strong candidate for success at the Test level. Additionally, his List-A record, with 546 runs in 21 matches, including one fifty and a century, indicates his adaptability across formats.
With the series set to begin in Rawalpindi, the spotlight will be on Huraira and his ability to contribute to Pakistan’s success. His journey from youth cricket to potentially making his Test debut is a testament to his hard work and dedication, and it’s clear that he is a player who could significantly impact Pakistan’s cricketing future.
