Once again, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have let an IPL trophy slip through their fingers. Despite displaying promise and a strong will to win, RCB’s 2024 season was characterized by patchy play and some conspicuous underperformances from important players. After winning just one of their opening seven games, RCB produced a stunning comeback, winning six straight to guarantee a postseason berth. But their adventure came to an end when they faced the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the elimination round. This IPL 2024, let’s examine the five players whose bad performances have hurt RCB the most.
The biggest underperformer for RCB in IPL 2024 was undoubtedly Glenn Maxwell. After a stellar 2023 season where he scored 400 runs, Maxwell’s form took a dramatic nosedive in 2024. He managed to score only 52 runs across nine innings, averaging a mere 5.7.
Maxwell’s inability to contribute significantly with the bat was a huge blow to RCB. His string of poor performances culminated in a first-ball duck in the crucial eliminator match against RR, shattering RCB’s hopes of posting a competitive total. His failure to find form throughout the season led to him being benched for several games, highlighting his drastic decline and its impact on RCB’s overall performance.
Faf du Plessis
The RCB captain, Faf du Plessis, was one of the most consistent performers in the 2023 season, scoring 730 runs at an impressive average of 56.1. However, the 2024 season saw a significant dip in his form. Despite scoring 438 runs in 15 matches, his average dropped to 29.2, which was below his usual standards.
Du Plessis managed to hit four half-centuries, but his inability to convert starts into big scores and his frequent dismissals in the powerplay (10 times in 15 matches) were major setbacks for RCB.
Mohammed Siraj, RCB’s leading pacer, had set high expectations after taking 19 wickets in IPL 2023. However, in the first half of the 2024 season, he took only four wickets in six matches and conceded runs heavily, weakening RCB’s attack. This dip in form led to his temporary exclusion. Though he made a comeback later, taking two crucial wickets in the eliminator against RR, his early struggles had already significantly impacted RCB’s tournament chances.
Traded from SunRisers Hyderabad, Mayank Dagar was expected to stabilize RCB’s spin department, especially after Shahbaz Ahmed’s departure. However, in his five matches, Dagar managed only one wicket and conceded runs at an economy rate of 10.1. His inability to take wickets and control runs led RCB to favor Karn Sharma over him, leaving RCB struggling for effective spin options and impacting their middle-overs control in several games
Bought for INR 11.5 crore with high expectations, West Indian pacer Alzarri Joseph was anticipated to be a game-changer for RCB. However, his stint was disappointing, taking only one wicket and conceding runs at an economy rate of 11.9 in three matches. His inability to perform led to his early exclusion from the playing XI, and he was replaced by Lockie Ferguson, spending most of the season on the bench.
