In this article, we will discuss the Cricket Highlights of IPL 2024, 01 of April: of Match 14. Mumbai Indians vs Rajasthan Royals. RR defeated MI by six wickets. In Match 14, Rajasthan Royals (RR) defeated Mumbai Indians (MI) by six wickets at the Wankhede Stadium, continuing their winning streak in the IPL 2024. With 27 balls remaining, RR, led by the bowlers, chased down the target and defeated MI after limiting them to 125.
After RR won the toss and chose to bowl, their opening bowlers vindicated their captain Sanju Samson. The opening bowlers for RR made excellent use of the abundance of movement available to them to establish the tone for their side. In the opening over, Trent Boult struck, catching Rohit Sharma off guard and dismissing Naman Dhir leg-before.
With Naman Dhir out of the picture, MI added Impact Player Dewald Brevis. MI did not benefit from that decision as in the third over, Brevis smacked his first ball off Boult to short third-man.
Then, Nandre Burger got one when Ishan Kishan (16 off 14 balls) edged one to the wicketkeeper in the following over. Hardik Pandya, the captain of MI, entered the game with a massive assignment before of him at 20 for four in the fourth over.
A counterattack ensued, with Tilak Varma and Pandya attempting to profit from the final two overs of the powerplay. Tilak hit a six-run shot over a fine leg off Boult. Pandya picked three boundaries in Burger’s final over of the powerplay, even utilizing his feet and attacking the bowler a few times.
Even after the powerplay, MI batted well as the runs kept coming in. Before Pandya (34 off 21 balls) was removed while attempting to knock Yuzvendra Chahal over long-on, Varma and Pandya put up 56 together. Then, Chahal’s magic destroyed any chance MI had of scoring a lot of points.
The leg-spinner held it tight and took three wickets in the middle overs. R Ashwin, who did not take a wicket in his four overs but only gave up 27 runs, was another excellent supporter of his. The fielders for RR supported their bowlers’ efforts. The highlight was when Piyush Chawla was dismissed by Shimron Hetmyer’s catch at point off Avesh Khan’s bowling.
Tim David was left to finish with the task of scoring after Tilak (32 off 29 balls) was eventually removed in the 14th over. Burger dismissed the big-hitting middle-order batter after he could muster only 17 runs in the arduous overs. MI scored 125 runs in the end.
Particularly, Jasprit Bumrah, the MI bowler was getting some movement off the wicket. Yashaswi Jaiswal attempted to go over cover but was caught by Kwena Maphaka in the opening over. The movement in the first overs tested Jos Buttler and Sanju Samson. But they overcame that phase because the target was not intimidating enough and the hitters were seizing their chances to score.
Before inside-edging one onto the stumps off Akash Madhwal, who was playing his debut match of the tournament, Samson struck a few standard drives through the off-side. A few overs later, Buttler dragged one straight to fine-leg, giving Madhwal another opportunity to score. In the eighth over, RR was 48 for 3.
MI lost the match thanks to a 40-run partnership between Ashwin and Riyan Parag. When Madhwal had Ashwin caught for sixteen, he scored another goal to end the partnership. In his debut game of the season, the right-arm pacer displayed excellent application.
Parag’s impressive run of form persisted. He had to adjust his approach this time and start cautiously. He quickened his pace as the objective got closer, hitting two straight sixes off Gerald Coetzee to reach his half-century mark. When Parag pulled one through fine-leg for four, the game was won.
Even though most hitters had a difficult day, Parag’s innings helped RR get through a few tense moments. He was undefeated after the match with 54 off 39 balls, the greatest total amongst the two teams that day. After the game, he received the Orange Cap for that performance.
