Except for the 17th over of the innings, Mustafizur Rahman bowled brilliantly against Punjab Kings (PBKS). However, this Chennai Super Kings (CSK) pacer could not take any wickets. As a result, his team lost by a large margin.
In response to CSK’s 162 runs, PBKS won by 7 wickets with 13 balls in hand. Mustafiz had to bowl 10 balls to complete the 17th over, but 4 balls of that over were wide despite not digesting the boundary. The left-arm pacer gave only 13 runs in his previous 3 overs, Maiden bowled his third over.
A maiden over is perhaps the rarest sight in the IPL of a run. Mustafiz did the rarest thing in the 15th over of the innings against PBKS. Maiden took over from Shashank Singh. He gave 21 runs in four overs but took no wickets. This left-arm pacer of Bangladesh remained wicketless for the first time in this year’s IPL.
Opener Jonny Bairstow and Rilee Rossouw, who dropped three, guided PBKS in the run chase. These two added 64 runs off 37 balls for the second wicket. Bairstow scored 46 off 30 balls and Rossouw got out with 43 runs off 23 balls, but PBKS had no trouble winning the match as the ball was in hand. In the end, Punjab Kings won with Sam Curran’s 26 and Shashank’s 25 runs.
Earlier, CSK lost 7 wickets and collected 162 runs after losing the toss to bat at the Chepauk Stadium in Chennai. Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad scored a maximum of 62 runs for the team.
CSK got off to a great start with the batting. Two openers Ajinkya Rahane and Gaikwad scored 55 runs by batting carefully in the powerplay. But then disaster started. Apart from losing wickets quickly, their run rate also decreased. CSK lost 2 wickets in two consecutive balls by Harpreet Brar in the ninth over. Rahane was dismissed for 29, and no runs came from Shivam Dube’s bat.
In the next over, Ravindra Jadeja returned after being hit by Rahul Chahar. Super Kings scored only 16 runs after losing 3 wickets in the next 4 overs of Powerplay. Sameer Rizvi and Gaikwad added just 37 runs in the third wicket partnership of 34 balls. Rizvi returned from not being able to open his hands throughout the innings and scored 21 runs off 23 balls.
In the end, Moeen Ali and Gaikwad made an impeccable pair of 38 runs off 14 balls. CSK crossed 150 with this pair. Gaikwad scored 62 off 48 balls with 5 fours and 2 sixes, falling prey to Arshdeep Singh. Moeen Ali (15) was dismissed in the next over.
In this tournament, MS Dhoni stormed in almost all the matches at the end. But in this match, he could not make a storm. He got out with 11 runs off 14 balls in the last ball of the innings. Dhoni was dismissed for the first time this season.
Harpreet Brar and Rahul Chahar bowled brilliantly for Punjab Kings. Both took two wickets each. Chahar gave 16 runs in 4 overs, and Harpreet gave only 1 run more in the same number of overs.
With 10 points from 10 matches, CSK is now at number four in the points table. On the other hand, PBKS is at number seven in the standings with 8 points from the same number of matches.
