With 358 runs to chase, Sri Lanka batted appallingly. The tremendous bowling of Muhammad Shami and Muhammad Siraj was too much for Kushal Mendis’s squad to handle. Maheesh Theekshana and Kasun Rajitha batted for the Lankans to miraculously avoid a disgraceful record after losing 8 wickets for 29 runs. However, following a crushing defeat, Sri Lanka was almost eliminated from the competition.
On Thursday, November 2, at the Mumbai Wankhede Stadium, India defeated Sri Lanka by a margin of 302 runs. India became the first side to win this game and secure their spot in the World Cup semi-final.
India is in astonishing form in this World Cup. The hosts are at the top with 14 points after winning all the first 7 matches. On the other hand, Sri Lanka is now on the verge of elimination. Having won two of the seven matches, the Lankans are in the sixth position in the points table with 4 points.
Sri Lanka lost 4 wickets in the first 4 overs while batting in front of Mohammad Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah as India was defending the daunting target of 358 runs. Siraj alone took three wickets.
Jasprit Bumrah sent back Pathum Nisanka on the first ball of the Lankans’ innings. Mohammad Siraj also followed in the senior’s footsteps. He got Dimuth Karunaratne through LBW off the first ball. Siraj also returned Sadeera Samarawickrama with the fifth ball of the same over. The right-arm pacer sent back Lankan captain Kushal Mendis with a brilliant delivery in his second over.
Sri Lanka fell under Mohammad Shami’s cannon after Siraj-Bumrah’s initial shock was not handled well. Shami created a storm in his next five overs. He took 5 wickets from five overs. At the end of the match, the Man of the Match award was also given to him.
The final wicket of the game was taken by Ravindra Jadeja. He removed Dilshan Madushanka from the game to end the innings. At 55 runs, Sri Lanka’s innings came to an end.
Earlier, after losing the toss and batting, India lost the wicket of captain Rohit Sharma in two balls. But Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill did not let any pressure come. They made a pair of 189 runs for the second wicket. Madushanka returns Gill and Virat and they were close to the century. Kohli made 88 off 94 balls, while Gill scored 92 runs off 92 balls.
Lokesh Rahul (21) and Suryakumar Yadav (12) did not see any big runs. There was a chance of 400 runs but it didn’t happen. Shreyas Iyer played a tornado inning at the end. India crossed 350 runs using his innings of 82 runs off 56 balls. Jadeja played an innings of 35 runs off 24 balls. Eventually, India’s innings stopped at 357 runs.
Dilshan Madushanka took 5 wickets for Sri Lanka. Dushmantha Chameera took one wicket.
