Chennai Super Kings vs Lucknow Super Giants (Match 6) – Highlights

Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings won their first match of the season at home yesterday. Hosts Super Kings and Lucknow Super Giants made up a flood of runs at the Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Monday night. Both teams scored 200 plus. In such a run-flooded match, Chennai won by just 12 runs.

Super Kings played the opening match of this year’s IPL. But they could not win against last season’s champion Gujarat Giants even after scoring 178 runs. Super Kings lost by 5 wickets. But this time KL Rahul’s Lucknow Super Giants could not prevent their victory.

After losing the toss and going down to bat first, Super Kings collected a big score of 217 runs, losing 7 wickets. The innings of Super Giants came to a halt when they scored 205 runs for 7 wickets. As a result, MS Dhoni’s team got their first win of the season by defeating them by 12 runs.  Moeen Ali’s all-around performance was the main reason behind Super Kings getting this victory. Besides scoring 19 runs off 13 balls, he took 4 wickets with 26 runs in 4 overs. As a result, Moeen was selected as the player of the match.

Winning the toss, the Super Giants captain decided to bowl first. The two Super Kings openers Devon Conway and Ruturaj Gaikwad got on top of the Super Giants bowlers after coming out to bat. They both put up a partnership of 110 runs in 9.1 overs.

The most devastating for the Yellow army was Ruturaj. He played a devastating innings of 92 runs in the previous match as well. But the team could not win that one. This time too, he played a devastating innings of 57 runs off 31 balls. He smashed 4 sixes with 3 boundaries.  Another opener of CSK, Conway played an innings of 47 runs off 29 balls hitting 2 sixes with 5 boundaries. Shivam Dube played an innings of 27 runs off 16 balls. Moeen Ali scored 19, and Ben Stokes scored 8 runs.

Ambati Rayudu played an innings of 27 runs off 14 balls. But yesterday’s match was a milestone for Dhoni. He touched the milestone of 5000 runs in the IPL playing an innings of 12 runs off 3 balls.

Ravi Bishnoi and Mark Wood took the maximum number of 3 wickets each for the Super Giants. Besides, Avesh Khan took 1 wicket. In response, Super Giants made an opening pair of 79 runs in 5.3 overs. It seemed that they would win very easily. Caribbean opener Kyle Mayers played a stormy innings of 53 runs off 22 balls. KL Rahul scored 20 runs off 18 balls. Besides, Nicholas Pooran scored 32 runs, and Marcus Stoinis scored 21 runs for the Lucknow team.

Super Giants needed 28 runs from the last over to win. Ayush Badoni was batting as an ‘Impact Player’ instead of pacer Avesh Khan at the crease. Krishnappa Gowtham was with him at the other end. The target was tough but Badoni and Gowtham had chances to do something great as Super Kings were forced to have one player more in the circle due to the slow overrate.

Pacer Tushar Deshpande started the last over with a pair of wides and no ball coming to the field as Chennai’s ‘Impact Player’. But the super giants were not successful in the end. After Badoni (23) got out on the third ball, Mark Wood scored 10 runs in the last two balls with a four and a six, but they could not reach the port of victory.

Apart from Moeen Ali’s 4 wickets, Tushar Deshpande took 2 wickets and Mitchell Santner took 1 wicket for the winning side.
