Getting defeated by Bangladesh, the Sri Lankan cricket team also lost against relatively weak opponents like Afghanistan. The 1996 world champions are on the backfoot after losing their two warm-up matches before the start of the Cricket World Cup 2023.

Sri Lanka was bowled out for 263 runs in 49.1 overs in the first warm-up match against Bangladesh last Friday. Chasing the target, Bangladesh won by 7 wickets with 48 balls in hand.
Sri Lanka lost the toss and batted first at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Gujarat on Tuesday. Captain Kusal Mendis played a devastating innings of 158 runs off 87 balls with the help of 19 fours and 9 sixes. Sri Lanka collected 294 runs in 46.2 overs in his batting prowess.
Afghanistan’s target was 257 runs in 42 overs in the DL method for victory. Chasing the target, Afghanistan won by 6 wickets with 23 balls in hand.
Chasing the target, Afghanistan lost the wicket of opener Ibrahim Zadran (7) for the team’s 19 runs. Then Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Rahmat Shah took the helm of the team. They put on a 212-run stand for the second wicket to take the team to the brink of victory.
All-rounder Mohammad Nabi came to the wicket after the rest of these two. But he could not do special favors. After scoring only 1 run off 8 balls, Nabi returned to the dressing room after falling victim to Lahiru Kumara. Then Najibullah Zadran and Azmatullah Omarzai conveyed the team to the port of victory with 23 balls in hand.
Rahmanullah scored 119 runs off 92 balls with the help of 8 fours and 9 sixes in the team’s victory. On the other hand, Rahmat scored 93 runs from 82 balls with the help of 10 fours and 3 sixes. Besides Najibullah scored 15 runs off 22 balls and Azmatullah remained unbeaten getting 14 runs off 7 balls.
Apart from Lahiru, pacer Kasun Rajitha picked up one more wicket for the Lankans. He spent just 18 runs in 7 overs with three maidens. Where his economy rate was 2.6. Moreover, no other bowler could bowl remarkably well for the Lankans.
Earlier, Sri Lanka got off to a great start coming down to bat first in their last warm-up match. Captain Kusal came to the wicket when the opener Dimuth Karunaratne (8) went back to the dressing room for the team’s 30 runs. He started stormy batting on the wicket immediately after his arrival.
After scoring 30 runs off 38 balls, another opener, Pathum Nissanka, returned to the pavilion and Kusal started an atrocious approach of batting on the wicket with Sadeera Samarawickrama. They both made a partnership of 175 runs for the third wicket. Whereas, Samarawickrama added only 39 runs and returned to the dugout getting out by Rashid Khan.
But apart from Kusal, no other batsman on the team could bat well. Kusal went to rest after scoring 158 runs, but the team’s score did not exceed 294 runs after losing all the wickets as the rest of the batters failed to perform well. Afghanistan used a total of eight bowlers against the Lankans. Out of which Nabi took the highest number of 4 wickets.
Mujeeb Ur Rahman was a bright exception from his teammates as he was parsimonious. The Afghan leg-spinner took the wicket of Karunaratne and conceded just 12 runs in 4 overs. Apart from this, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Naveen-ul-Haq, Abdul Rahman, and Rashid got 1 wicket each.
