Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians entered the field in the 51st match of IPL on Friday (May 3). Batting first in the game, Knight Riders scored 169 runs after losing all wickets in 19.5 overs. In reply, Mumbai Indians’ innings ended with 145 runs in 18.5 overs. As a result, KKR secured an outstanding victory of 24 runs.
With this win, the Knight Riders moved further towards the playoffs. On the other hand, MI is in danger as they lost four games in a row. Now KKR is in second place in the standings with 14 points from 10 matches. And after playing one match more, MI is in ninth place among 10 teams with only 6 points. Hardik Pandya’s team has been knocked out of the race for the playoffs.
After losing the toss and batting first against MI, KKR scored 169 runs with one ball remaining in the innings. The team lost 5 wickets after scoring 57 runs off the bowling canon of Nuwan Thushara and Hardik. Philip Salt (5), Sunil Narine (8), Angkrish Raghuvanshi (13), Shreyas Iyer (6), and Rinku Singh (9) could not do anything for the team.
KKR was under pressure after losing 5 wickets quickly. After that, Venkatesh Iyer and Manish Pandey brought the team back into the match with a partnership of 83 runs for the sixth wicket. Manish was caught out by substitute player Dewald Brevis after scoring 42 runs off 31 balls, the bowler to get him was Hardik.
Venkatesh scored a brilliant fifty despite Manish getting out. He scored 70 off 52 balls before being bowled by Jasprit Bumrah. For Mumbai Indians, Jasprit Bumrah and Nuwan Thushara took the highest number of three wickets each. Besides, Hardik Pandya took two wickets and Piyush Chawla took one wicket.
In response to 170 runs, MI started losing wickets at regular intervals. Varun Chakaravarthy, Narine, Andre Russell, and Mitchell Starc pushed MI out of the match. Where Starc alone scalped 4 wickets for KKR. As a result, the hosts lost 6 wickets to get 71 runs on the scoreboard.
Apart from Suryakumar Yadav, no batsman could shine in this match for MI. Suryakumar and Tim David made a partnership of 49 runs for the seventh wicket. Suryakumar was caught by salt off Russell after scoring fifty (56 runs off 35 balls). And Tim David was stopped by Starc for 24 runs. In this, Mumbai Indians were all out for 145 runs before 7 balls.
Apart from Mitchell Starc, Varun Chakaravarthy, Sunil Narine and Andre Russell picked up 2 wickets each.
