Australia couldn’t get a good start to the World Cup. However, the five-time world champions did not make a mistake in turning around. After four consecutive victories, Pat Cummins‘ team took a step forward in the race for the semi-finals by defeating arch-rivals England.
Australia faced England in a crucial World Cup match in Ahmedabad on Saturday (November 4). The Aussies beat the English by 33 runs in the fight for standing.
After losing the toss and getting to bat first, Australia scored 286 runs at the end of the first innings. In response, the English were bowled out for 253 runs with 11 balls in hand. With this loss, England became the second team after Bangladesh to be eliminated from the World Cup.
England lost the wicket of Jonny Bairstow on the first ball chasing the target set by the Aussies. Like the rest of the matches, Joe Root (13) failed with the bat in this match. Both were sent back by Mitchell Starc.
Ben Stokes and Dawid Malan led the team after Starc’s twin hits. The game of both bats was progressing well. Malan picked up the 6th fifty of his career. But he could not stay on the wicket after that. The English were put under pressure again when Malan returned to the dressing room after falling victim to Cummins. Then captain Jos Buttler departed with just 1 run.
Ben Stokes made a partnership of 63 runs with Moeen Ali and took the team the way to victory again. But the English middle order collapsed like a house of cards when Stokes returned to the dressing room after being victimized by Adam Zampa. He got out scoring 64 runs. Moeen, who scored 42 runs, also returned to the pavilion being victim to Zampa.
Chris Woakes and Adil Rashid tried hard in the end, but it was of no use except to reduce the gap. In the end, England were all out for 253 runs. For Australia, spinner Adam Zampa took the leading number of 3 wickets with only 21 runs in 10 overs. Besides, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, and Josh Hazlewood took 2 wickets each, and Marcus Stoinis took 1 wicket.
Earlier, after losing the toss and batting first, Australia lost Travis Head (11) in the second over of the innings. David Warner (15) also could not stay at the crease for long. In the sixth over he was dismissed by Woakes and caught by David Willey.
Steven Smith and Marnus Labuschagne handled the initial shock with a pair of 75 runs. Smith returned with 44 runs off Adil Rashid. Then wicket-keeper batsman Josh Inglis returned for just 3 runs. However, Labuschagne advanced the run. He picked up a fifty on the way to a partnership of 61 runs with Cameron Green.
Labuschagne was dismissed by Mark Wood for 71 runs. After he returned to the dressing room, Green made a partnership of 45 runs with Stoinis. Green was bowled, scoring 47 runs from 52 balls. Stoinis added 35 runs. Cummins (10) didn’t last as well. In the end, Zampa played a cameo innings of 29 runs off 19 balls. Starc, who supported him scored 10 runs. And with that, Australia’s innings stopped at 286 runs.
