Cricket Highlights, 06 July: England vs Australia (3rd Test)

England vs Australia (3rd Test)

On July 6, the third game of the five-match Test series took place between England and Australia. For England, this game was a struggle for survival. The hosts are in a tough spot after dropping the previous two Tests. The third Test begins at Leeds on Thursday and will require Ben Stokes’ team to turn things around. If that not happens, the five-match series will be lost.

In such a crucial game, Ben Stokes, the English captain, won the toss. He requested that Australia bat first. Australia was taken aback when the batting began. David Warner (4) was dismissed by Stuart Broad on the fifth ball of the innings. They later lost 4 wickets for a total of 85 runs.

After losing 4 wickets for 85 runs, Mitchell Marsh’s century forced Australia to play. They lost 5 wickets and scored 240 runs. Then Chris Woakes defeated Marsh after he scored 118 runs in his innings, including 17 boundaries and 4 sixes. After that, Australia’s innings ended in failure.

Then in the following 23 runs, Australia lost the final 5 wickets. The Australians’ first innings came to an end with 263 runs in 60.4 overs from 240 for 4 in 52 overs. With just 5 wickets, Mark Wood wreaked havoc. Woakes claimed three wickets. Two wickets were also taken by Stuart Broad.

The third Test of the Ashes series was a battle, just like the first two. After dismissing Australia for 263 runs on the first day, England was in danger. With 68 runs for 3 wickets, the hosts finished the day. English was 195 runs behind. Harry Brook (3), and Ben Duckett (2) were Pat Cummins’ victims. Late in the afternoon, set batter Jack Crowley (33), went back to the dressing room. Then with the aid of Stokes’ 108-ball 80-run innings, England recovered. However, they were eventually bowled out for 237 runs in 52.3 overs.

Due to the recent three days of rain, the 60-over game was useless. On the third day, though, the English put more pressure on Australia. In the second innings, Australia scored 224 runs thanks to Broad, Woakes, and Mark Wood who refrain to make runs.

The rain stopped at the conclusion of the second session on the third day. Consequently, the game starts. However, only one session was actually played. There was power in the Pacers for England. After the second day, Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh remained unblemished. In the second innings, Marsh, who had a century in the first, could not put up significant runs. For 28 runs, Woakes bowled him out. Before that, Khawaja scored 43 runs, and 33 runs were scored by Marnus Labuschagne.

Australia continued to lose wickets on a regular basis. Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Alex Carey were not given any at-bats. Travis Head was responsible for increasing the team’s scores as eight wickets fell. He was carrying it out. He was hitting a hard cricket. He was making an effort to move quickly. He was hitting huge shots every time. He swiftly reached a half-century because of this. Besides, Todd Murphy accompanied Head.

Australia’s innings reached 200 thanks to Head. Broad struck out Murphy for 11 runs, but Head did not intervene. In one over of Wood, he smacked a pair of sixes. Head eventually was dismissed after hitting Broad for a six. He scored 77 runs. Australia scored 224 runs throughout the second innings.

For England, Broad and Woakes each took three wickets in the second innings. Besides, Moeen Ali and Wood each claimed two wickets. After the third day, England only had five overs to bat. Australia attempted to remove England’s wicket in the meanwhile. But with a target of 251 runs, England got off to a strong start. The score for England at the end of the third day was 27 without a wicket. The fourth and fifth days were there for the left 224 runs for England.

However, the 42-run stand between England’s two openers, Jack Crawley and Ben Duckett, served as the winning cue. After scoring 23 runs, Ben Duckett was struck out. In 44 runs, Crawley was also out. Moeen Ali was ejected after five runs. 21 runs were scored by Joe Root.

The English middle-order batsmen were led by Harry Brooks. Brooks steadily helped England reach its victory objective with the help of Ben Stokes (13), Jonny Bairstow (5), and Chris Woakes.

After 230 runs, he was out of the game. His 75 off 93 ball inning included 9 fours. Then, only 21 runs were needed. Mark Wood and Chris Woakes completed the task for victory. With 32, Woakes was still unblemished, and Wood had 16. As a result, England defeated Australia in the third Ashes Test at Leeds Headingley by a margin of three wickets.
