Cricket Highlights, November 30 – December 03: Bangladesh tour of West Indies (2nd Test) – Bangladesh vs West Indies
BAN vs WI (2nd Test) – Highlights In a thrilling Test match, BAN triumphed over the WI by 101 runs in the second Test
Bangladesh-Sri Lanka has met three times before in the ODI World Cups. The Tigers have lost by a big margin to the Lankans in all three matches earlier. Bangladesh has never won against the Lankans not only in ODIs but also in T20 World Cup. However, Shakib Al Hasan’s team wrote a different story this time. The Tigers have defeated Sri Lanka for the first time in a World Cup in any format.
Bangladesh beat Sri Lanka by 3 wickets in the World Cup group stage match on Monday (November 6). Although they were eliminated from the World Cup earlier, the Tigers keep their hopes of the 2025 Champions Trophy alive by winning this match.
After 6 losses in a row, they were the 9th-ranked team in the standings of this edition of the World Cup. However, Bangladesh has reached the 7th position in the points table of the World Cup by winning this match. Even though they have equal points in the same match, Sri Lanka’s position is eighth because they are behind in net run rate. Both teams must be in the last eight to play in the Champions Trophy. Therefore, the next match is very important for these two teams.
In recent times Bangladesh-Sri Lanka match has repeatedly spread heat. Angelo Mathews’ controversial dismissal on the World Cup stage has increased the heat. Leaving all this behind, Bangladesh came under pressure in the beginning chasing the challenging target of 280 runs. Tanzid Hasan (9) returned with a catch to Pathum Nissanka off Dilshan Madushanka’s ball for the team’s 17 runs.
Litton Das played some great shots after losing the first wicket. But Madushanka picked him up too. Litton was lbw by Madushanka in the seventh over of the Bangladesh innings. Litton made 23 off 22 balls with two fours and two sixes.
But after his departure, Shakib and Najmul Hossain Shanto formed a big pair. Bangladesh got the basis of victory in their pair of 169 runs made from 149 balls. Both have completed fifty. Shanto scored 90 runs off 101 balls. Shakib slashed 82 runs off 65 balls.
Mathews sent both Shakib and Shanto back in a quick time. It put Bangladesh under a bit of pressure. Bangladesh was progressing well with the bat of Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah. But Madushanka had forced Bangladesh to be under pressure again when Mushfiq (10) returned.
Bangladesh also lost the wickets of Mahmudullah (22) and Mehidy Hasan Miraz (3) in quick time. There was some concern after losing 7 wickets, but in the end, with the bat of Tanzim Hasan Sakib and Towhid Hridoy, Bangladesh left the field with a win with 53 balls in hand.
Earlier, Sri Lanka lost a wicket in the first over after going down to bat first. Mushfiq caught Kusal Perera (4) in a great dive off Shoriful Islam. However, Nissanka and captain Kusal Mendis were quickly scoring runs in the third wicket pair. In the 12th over, Shakib forced Mendis to be caught by Shoriful. The Lankan skipper scored 19 runs off 30 balls.
After the departure of Mendis, Nissanka (41) also didn’t last long, and Tanzim got his first wicket in the World Cup by bowling him. New batsmen Sadeera Samarawickrama and Charith Asalanka were on the way to form another big pair. They added 63 runs to this pair. Shakib also broke this pair which was becoming formidable. Samarawickrama scored 41 runs off 42 balls and was caught by Mahmudullah off Shakib.
Then a strange thing happened. Mathews brought the wrong helmet to the crease. The helmet was replaced with a new one as the strap was torn. But this all-rounder did not think that it was suitable for use in the game. The umpire gave him out when Bangladesh appealed for time out for wasting time. Mathews walked back to the pavilion being ‘timed-out’ as the first player in the history of cricket.
Charith Asalanka put on a 78-run partnership with Dhananjaya de Silva after Mathews returned to the dugout without playing a ball. Miraz broke this pair. De Silva scored 34 runs off 36 balls. But Asalanka has seen the century. He fell victim to Tanzim’s 108 off 105 balls with 6 fours and 5 sixes.
Maheesh Theekshana was dismissed by Shoriful as he scored 22 runs off 31 balls. In the end, Sri Lanka was all out scoring 279 runs with 3 balls left in the innings.
