Multan Sultans pulled off an astonishing 4-wicket victory over Peshawar Zalmi courtesy of Rilee Rossouw’s devastating innings in Match 27 of PSL 2023 at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. Rilee Rossouw was presented as the player of the match for his match-winning innings of 121 runs off 51 balls hitting 12 fours and 8 sixes.
After winning the toss, Peshawar Zalmi captain Babar Azam elected to bat first sending Multan Sultans to bowl. Peshawar Zalmi collected a huge score of 242 runs after losing 6 wickets in the stipulated 20 overs. In reply, Multan Sultans reached the port of victory by losing 6 wickets in 19.1 overs.
With this, Peshawar Zalmi gets defeated twice despite collecting 240+ runs in two consecutive matches. They lost by 8 wickets despite scoring 240 runs against Quetta Gladiators in the previous match and got defeated by 4 wickets despite scoring 242 runs in this match.
Peshawar Zalmi’s two openers Saim Ayub and Babar Azam gave the team a flying start after coming down to bat. The two built up a magnificent opening partnership of 134 runs in 11.4 overs. Mohammed Haris came to the wicket when Saim departed for 58 runs off 33 balls with 5 fours and 4 sixes.
Then captain Babar returned to the pavilion with 73 runs off 39 balls (9 fours and 2 sixes). But Haris and Tom Kohler-Cadmore continued to take the team towards a bigger total. Haris played a stormy innings of 35 runs off 11 balls with 1 four and 4 sixes. On the other hand, Kohler-Cadmore scored 38 runs off 18 balls. Where he struck 4 fours and 2 sixes.
However, in the end, Peshawar Zalmi was able to collect a big target of 242 runs thanks to the cameo innings of Azmatullah Omarzai (6 balls 16) and Wahab Riaz (2 balls 7). Abbas Afridi scalped the maximum number of 4 wickets for Multan Sultans. Besides, Usama Mir and Anwar Ali took 1 wicket each.
Chasing a daunting target of 243 runs, Multan Sultans fell under pressure at the beginning. They lost 2 wickets for only 28 runs in 2.3 overs. But from there, Rilee Rossouw and experienced Caribbean all-rounder Kieron Pollard brought the team back into the match. The duo picked up 66 runs in 6 overs of power play. For the 3rd wicket, these two put together a remarkable partnership of 99 runs off 43 balls.
Pollard returned to the dressing room after scoring 52 runs off 25 balls with 3 fours and 5 sixes. After coming to the wicket, Tim David (2) and Khushdil Shah (18) could not do anything worth remembering, but Rossouw was guiding the team forward by playing firmly at the other end of the wicket. This devastating batsman scored a century in just 41 balls on the first ball of the 16th over. Rossouw took 19 runs in that over.
In the end, Rossouw (121 from 51 balls) returned to the pavilion after playing a daring innings for the team’s 227 runs. When he departed, the team still needed 16 runs off 9 balls. However, courtesy of unbeaten cameo innings by Anwar Ali and Usama Mir, Multan Sultans finally reached the brink of victory with 5 balls to remain in the match.
Anwar scored 24 runs from 8 balls and Usama left the field with 11 runs from 3 balls. Azmatullah Omarzai took the highest number of 2 wickets for Peshawar Zalmi. Besides, Wahab Riaz, Saim Ayub, Mujib Ur Rahman, and Arshad Iqbal took 1 wicket each.
Multan Sultans have climbed up to the 3rd position in the points table with five successes and four losses in nine matches. On the other hand, Peshawar Zalmi is still in the 4th position in the points table securing four wins and getting undone five times in nine matches.
