Debutant pacer Matthew Forde made the biggest contribution to bring West Indies a victory in the final match of the three-match ODI series. This pacer not only picked up 3 wickets for 29 runs but also scored an important 13 runs with the bat at the last moment of danger. West Indies won the series against England after 16 years thanks to the 21-year-old Caribbean star’s brilliant performance.
As per Local time, the Caribbean won the series against the English for the first time since 2007 thanks to the win in a rain-hit home ground in Bridgetown on Saturday. On this day, the game could not start at the scheduled time due to the rain. After reducing the number of overs, England collected 206 runs, losing 9 wickets by playing the first innings of 40 overs.
In reply, rain struck again before West Indies went down to bat. Later, the hosts were given a target of 188 runs in 34 overs by the DLS method. Chasing this challenging target, the Caribbean reached the port of victory with 14 balls and 4 wickets in hand.
At the start of the day, England took a serious hit after losing the toss and having to bat first. England lost 5 wickets for 49 runs in Forde’s great spell. They lost the wickets of opener Philip Salt (4) and Zak Crawley (0) who came to the crease at number three to collect just 8 runs. Another opener, Will Jacks (17) returned with the team’s 45 runs. Skipper Jos Buttler, who signaled a return to form with a half-century in the previous match, scored zero runs in this game.
Ben Duckett and Liam Livingstone pulled England from there. The pair put up 88 runs. Duckett returned to the pavilion after scoring a personal 71 off 73 balls in the team’s 137 runs. After that, Livingstone returned to the dressing room after scoring 45 individual runs in the team’s 142 runs.
But still, England crossed the 200 mark as Matthew Potts and Gus Atkinson added 35 runs for the last wicket. Matthew Forde took the maximum number of 3 wickets with only 29 runs in 8 overs for the Caribbeans. Besides, Alzarri Joseph also took 3 wickets and Romario Shepherd snapped up 2.
West Indies initially stumbled in chasing the target. The hosts lost their first wicket by 2 runs. The Caribbeans then went ahead with the partnership of Alick Athanaze and Keacy Carty. Carty picked up his fifty (58 balls). Alick played an innings of 45 runs. Shai Hope’s team was a bit scared towards the end. They lost 6 wickets for 135 runs.
However, the West Indies won with the bat of Shepherd and Matthew Forde after overcoming the fear. Shepherd scored 41 runs, along with Forde’s contribution of 13 runs, they brought the team to the brink of victory in an unbroken partnership of 56 runs.
Debutant cricketer Matthew Forde expressed his happiness after being selected as the player of the match. Apart from this, Shai Hope was selected as the player of the series by performing well. These two teams will face each other in a five-match T20I series on December 13.
